Urban Design Guidelines to Mitigate Urban Heat Island (UHI) Effects In Hot-Dry Cities

Abstract: Global warming and undeniable climatic change in the world have led to decreasing thermal comfort for humans. Urban heat island (UHI) is the most documented phenomenon which has led to the increasing temperature in urban areas. It has received much focus in the past few decades to evaluate the main effective criteria of UHI. Street heat has negative effects on human health and will only worsen in future; these negative effects would double in hot and dry urban area. This paper investigates the effects of UHI i… Show more

“…Another significant consequence of UHI is the intensification of energy usage for air-conditioning especially in hot climates. For instance, the UHI imposes residents of Los Angeles to pay approximately US$ 100 million annually for energy (Taslim, Parapari, & Shafaghat, 2015).…”

“…It lowers workers' productivity, hereby causing negative economic consequences [11]. The UHI effect seems to raise energy consumption due to a higher usage of air conditioning [12][13][14][15][16][17]. This may result in increased electricity consumption from fossil fuels and hence in a deteriorated air quality and in increased greenhouse gas emissions [18][19][20].…”
