Urban Farming as a Transformative Planning Practice: The Contested New Territories in Hong Kong

Abstract: This article presents an alternative approach to understanding urban farming. Through the lens of feminist theories of regenerative politics, it demonstrates that urban farming can be rearticulated as/for/from within a transformative planning practice. Drawing on planning practices in the less studied terrain of Hong Kong—the New Territories bordering mainland China—this article illustrates how urban farming can be seen as an enabling, cross-scale practice that nurtures the micro-politics of democracy in every… Show more

Seen through a Southern urbanist lens, the khets of Korail are invented spaces that contest the hegemony of dominant notions of urban resilience.…”

“…Through similar programs, urban farming practitioners received assistance from the government, private sector, and individuals (Hallett et al, 2016). The Hong Kong government has incorporated urban farming activities into future urban planning efforts to meet the food needs of its urban population (Huang, 2021). It is hoped that various supportive government practices like these can be adopted by the Indonesian government, allowing urban farming activities to run sustainably.…”

“…Along with the development of the era of technology and ideas began to develop, an idea emerged, where initially food agriculture was mostly only on the outskirts of the city, now food agriculture can be brought to urban areas by directing this agriculture in a modern way or Urban Farming (Rutt, 2020;Huang, 2021). Urban Farming is an agricultura l cultivation activity carried out in urban areas with minimal land conditions but can still be productive in producing quality food (Md Ibharim & Salim, 2020;Muhammad et al, 2020) which can be carried out on land in residential areas with various media.…”
