Urban forest loss using a GIS-based approach and instruments for integrated urban planning: A case study of João Pessoa, Brazil

Abstract: Urban forests play an important role in the thermal comfort and overall life of local populations in large-and medium-sized cities. This study analyzes urban forest loss and maps land use and land cover (LULC) changes between 1991 and 2018 by evaluating the use of urban planning instruments for the mitigation of urban forest loss in João Pessoa, Brazil. For this purpose, satellite-derived LULC images from 1991, 2006, 2010 and 2018 and data on urban forest loss areas obtained using the Google Earth Engine were … Show more

“…In addition, this study also validates the validity and application potential of remote-sensing data and GIS in urban forest data measurement. Lacerda Lidi et al explored the effectiveness of urban planning tools in mitigating urban forest loss by using geographic information systems and drew detailed images through changes in land use and land cover [6].The study explored patterns, traces, and hot-spot characteristics of urban expansion and forest cover loss, and the accuracy of the results was high, with an average of about 91%. Chen Jianchao and other experts have conducted in-depth comparative studies on the effective and intelligent management methods of urban street trees [7].…”

“…Policymakers can make well-informed decisions with the assistance of deep learning models. They provide comprehensive insights into potential risks and aid in developing strategies that prioritize public safety and environmental preservation (Lacerda et al 2021;Ranagalage et al 2019). A significant benefit of deep learning models is their ability for ongoing learning and adaptation.…”

“…In this context, urban planning aims to create sustainable, livable, and functional urban environments that meet the needs of the community. By making the most efficient use of limited urban space, it provides adequate infrastructure and facilities while preserving open spaces and green areas [5][6][7][8][9]. Urban planning strives to promote social inclusion and equity by providing equal access to public services and amenities, such as transportation, housing, and education, regardless of income or social status [10][11][12].…”
