In many parts of the world, concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic and city quarantine policy have led to a general decline in the physical and mental health of residents due to insufficient social interaction. These adverse effects can cause potential public health risks. Ways to alleviate the adverse impact of the pandemic and meet social interaction needs must be widely addressed. This survey was conducted from 1–5 April 2020; it collected 386 responses from residents of Chengdu, China, during the pandemic based on an online survey questionnaire. The results indicate that most of the residents believe their health status is poor, and that they do not experience adequate social contact with others. Most of the respondents indicated no difference in mental health, while a few reported differences in their physical health and social interaction levels. Visiting urban parks can significantly improve overall health and assist in meeting individuals’ social interaction needs. Although residents have reduced the frequency of visits during the pandemic, even once a week can be beneficial. This paper emphasizes the critical role of urban parks during the pandemic period from the perspective of the urban building environment. The conclusion affirms that urban parks and large outdoor, open spaces can provide residents with a place for safe outdoor activities and social interaction in a green environment during a pandemic, as well as serve as a buffer area to maintain favorable health and quality of life.

In complex urban systems, urban parks are rare hot spots of nature, responsible for delivering a range of ecosystem services. Trees are critically important components of urban parks that provide many benefits, and, at the same time, face challenges such as lack of funds, mismanagement, climate change, pests, and diseases. There is a growing need to increase the urban tree cover to sustain urban ecosystems. Successful policymaking requires engagement with all stakeholders, especially park users. An understanding of how people's perceptions of the benefits and challenges faced by urban park trees is pivotal to making decisions that have long-standing support. We surveyed 521 park visitors in Multan, Pakistan, to assess their valuation of urban park trees, their understanding of the challenges faced by trees, and their willingness to pay (WTP) for increasing tree cover in urban parks. We found that people widely appreciated the ecosystem services provided by park trees. Provision of oxygen, shade, and clean air was considered the greatest benefits while cutting down, lack of space, and urbanization were perceived as the biggest challenges to trees. Respondents showed a WTP and believed in government-public cooperation for increasing tree cover. Income, age, and education were significant predictors of WTP. The study reflects findings in other development and geography contexts and highlights the need for broader dissemination of information on critical threats to park trees and underlines the potential for engaging locally to maximize effectively in the management of park trees.

Vivemos num tempo em que as cidades aumentam a sua população e densificam o espaço urbano, o que, geralmente, condiciona também o contacto com a natureza. Desta forma, as crianças crescem hoje distanciadas da natureza, o que traz consequências para a aprendizagem acerca do meio natural, nomeadamente aquela que ocorre pela sua experimentação e observação direta, muitas vezes enquanto brincam. Os espaços verdes urbanos (EVU) prestam um serviço neste âmbito aos habitantes das cidades, ao qual, muito dificilmente se encontra alternativa. Assim, o presente trabalho explora os EVU enquanto espaços que permitem brincar ao ar livre e, simultaneamente, a aprendizagem, na qual a criança explora o meio natural, conhece a fauna e a flora da região, bem como aprende jogos tradicionais, entre outros. Elaboraram-se para isso inquéritos por questionário anónimo, destinados a alunos do 1.º Ciclo do Ensino Básico de um Agrupamento de Escolas da cidade de Bragança e seus encarregados de educação, nos quais se questionam ambas as gerações acerca do uso dos espaços verdes/meio natural para brincar. O trabalho conclui acerca da importância dos EVU enquanto locais que disponibilizam maior espaço para brincar e contacto com a natureza, bem como são também espaços de aprendizagem e sociabilização. Conclui-se ainda acerca das diferentes vivências entre gerações e dos EVU serem utilizados para brincadeiras promotoras do exercício físico e mais “tradicionais”.
