Urbanization in the Pacific: environmental change, vulnerability and human security

Abstract: The world is in the midst of a substantial urban transition, but the impacts of this on the environment and human societies are not fully understood. Very little attention has been paid to urbanization processes in developing countries with smaller populations, despite the evident problems associated with urbanization. There are both biophysical and social vulnerabilities associated with urbanization in the South Pacific and these vulnerabilities affect human security. The biophysical vulnerabilities include t… Show more

“…Fang Chuanglin et al systematically analyzed the basic theoretical framework of the interaction and coupling effect of urbanization and the ecological environment in megalopolis [30]. Cocklin et al studied the relationship between urbanization and environmental vulnerability and human security in the south Pacific [31]. Chen et al respectively constructed a comprehensive evaluation index system for urbanization from four aspects of population, economy, society, and land, and conducted a comprehensive measurement of urbanization since the reform and opening up based on the entropy value method.…”

“…Yet, those who move to cities often replace a subsistence lifestyle with one that relies on wage labour and therefore the purchase (rather than the production) of food. In many PICTs this means a reliance on imported basic foodstuffs with their associated packaging (Cocklin and Keen, ; SPREP, , : 10). This also means little incentive for food waste composting.…”
