Ureteral Metastasis From an Appendiceal Carcinoma and Diagnosis by Endoscopic Ultrasound-Guided Fine-Needle Aspiration

Abstract: Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) is a standard tool for imaging the gastrointestinal tract and adjacent structures. EUS-guided fine-needle aspiration (FNA) allows the endosonographer easy access to these structures for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. We describe a case of metastatic lesion, adherent to a stented right ureter, which was imaged with transrectal EUS, with successful cytologic identification after EUS-guided FNA. EUS and EUS-guided FNA can be valuable tools in the evaluation of some soft-tiss… Show more

“…Extrarectal lesions, including primary and secondary malignancies, and benign conditions of the pelvic cavity are amenable for evaluation by EUS-FNA and core biopsies. 279,280 In a histologic study, transrectal EUS-guided core biopsies of pelvic tumors had a sensitivity of 88%, specificity of 100%, positive predictive value of 100%, and negative predictive value of 89%. Sufficient tissue was obtained for tissue examination in all cases and apart from one postbiopsy hemorrhage, which was managed conservatively, no other complications were encountered.…”

“…6 EUS is a potentially useful modality to diagnose pelvic lesions in close proximity to the rectosigmoid colon. Although a few case reports have described the use of EUS or EUS-guided FNA (EUS-FNA) in the diagnosis of pelvic lesions, 1,2,[7][8][9] there have been few larger studies evaluating the role of EUS in these patients. 10,11 Furthermore, the accuracies of EUS-FNA and EUS-guided Tru-cut biopsy (EUS-TCB) in pelvic masses have not been described.…”
