URLLC and eMBB in 5G Industrial IoT: A Survey

Abstract: Fifth generation (5G)-industrial Internet of things (IIoT) is the integration of IIoT and a private 5G network. The IIoT is a concept that involves incorporating smart objects, gadgets, and solutions into cutting-edge industrial operations to increase reliability, efficiency, and over-production costs. Furthermore, the integration of IIoT and 5G/beyond 5G (B5G) provides the potential for ubiquitous and instantaneous connectivity. The 5G architecture can handle the IIoT's stringent ultra-low latency, real-time … Show more

“…The resource allocation occurs in every time slot with 0.5 ms duration of each [5]. But in 5G the latency requirements are different for different services and applications as shown in Table 3 [17], [18], [19], [20]. For many applications, the latency requirement is 1 ms, hence with the LTE the E2E or roundtrip latency of 1 ms is not practicable.…”

“…Khan, et al, 38 reviewed several papers following Beyond 5G (B5G) based on the Industrial Internet of Things, with an investigation on eMBB and URLLC. In this paper, they tried to discuss the B5G structure based on IoT layers.…”

“…These MTC devices, in most circumstances, have resource and energy limitations, necessitating a rigorous power consumption method. 1,2 However, energy-efficient communication employing resource-constrained devices may jeopardize the achievable quality-of-service (QoS) performance of M2M communication. In addition, a variety of novel IoT applications need ultra-reliable and low-latency communication (URLLC), with latency as low as a few milliseconds and packet loss less than 10 −4 .…”

“…Machine‐to‐machine (M2M) communication is considered one of the key enabling technologies for Internet‐of‐Things (IoT) and fifth‐generation (5G) and beyond cellular networks, which allows machine‐type communication (MTC) devices to communicate without (or with very little) human intervention. These MTC devices, in most circumstances, have resource and energy limitations, necessitating a rigorous power consumption method 1,2 . However, energy‐efficient communication employing resource‐constrained devices may jeopardize the achievable quality‐of‐service (QoS) performance of M2M communication.…”
