Ursodeoxycholic Acid for the Dissolution of Radiolucent Gall Bladder Stones

Abstract: In a prospective dosage response study of 84 patients with radiolucent gall bladder stones treated with ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA), a dose of 500 mg daily was as effective as 1,000 mg daily. Complete dissolution of stones was achieved in 9 of 31 patients (29 %) treated for at least 6 months with the lower dose, and in 7 of 33 patients (21 %) on the higher dose. 4 patients in each group continue on treatment having shown partial gall-stone dissolution. When the two dosage groups were considered together, small… Show more

“…BAT is undoubtedly the safest current treatment. Although side effects such as diarrhea, hepatotoxicity and increase in low-density lipoprotein were causes for concern when chenodeoxycholic acid was the mainstay of therapy, these problems were virtually eliminated with the introduction of ursodeoxycholic acid and with the use of combined therapy (118)(119)(120)(121)(122)(123)(124)(125). It may be stated that after almost two decades of use no serious complications of the therapy have been reported.…”

“…Many case series detailing BAT'S ability to cure are available (118)(119)(120)(121)(122)(123)(124)(127)(128)(129)(130). The selection criteria used in these series may be classified as "superoptimal," optimal or acceptable ( Table 2).…”

“…Bile acid therapy is an attractively safe option but is suitable for only a few patients and is unsuitable in those with severe recurrent symptoms 20. The gall bladder must be functioning, and this can be best be shown by an oral cholecystogram.…”
