Usability and Teachability of Continuous Glucose Monitoring Devices in Older Adults and Diabetes Educators: Task Analysis and Ease-of-Use Survey

Abstract: Background Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices continuously sense and relay glucose concentration data from the interstitial fluid to a mobile phone or receiver. Older adults benefit from this continuous monitoring of glucose levels. Proper deployment of the sensing wire is facilitated by a specialized applicator. Objective Our aim was to assess a new seventh-generation (G7) CGM device (Dexcom, Inc) for use by adults 65 years of age or older and… Show more

“…Utilization of any glycemic device can include challenges regarding manual dexterity in older adults who may have physical limitations with inability to place CGM devices without assistance. One study by Psavko et al 31 assessed the ease of use of CGM in older adults and noted reduced cognitive burden and improved usability with subsequent advancements and reduced number of tasks required to place a CGM with a new generation of devices studied. In addition, utilizing a personal smartphone as a receiver for CGM may be a barrier for patients who are not familiar with this technology.…”

“…A seventh-generation “G7” CGM system (Dexcom) provides several improvements over the G6 system, including better accuracy in nonpregnant adults, 20 a simpler insertion process, 21 a shorter warmup period, and a smaller thinner wearable. 22 The Dexcom G7 has received FDA clearance in the United States, where it is indicated for the management of diabetes in persons 2 years and older and can be worn during pregnancy for all types of diabetes.…”
