Usability Methodologies for Real-Life Voice User Interfaces

Abstract: This paper studies the usability methodologies for spoken dialogue web interfaces along with the appropriate designer-needs analysis. The work unfolds a theoretical perspective to the methods that are extensively used and provides a framework description for creating and testing usable content and applications for conversational interfaces. The main concerns include the design issues for usability testing and evaluation during the development lifecycle, the basic customer experience metrics and the problems th… Show more

“…However, building intelligent virtual agents with advanced verbal and nonverbal skills altogether to fully address consistent, coherent, realistic and desirable functional and behavioural responses interpreted by the human users as humanlike and supporting long-term engagement in the endorsed behaviour posits a considerable ongoing challenge for both academic and commercial artificial intelligence designers to navigate [30]. Given the broad range of conditions in which intelligent agents or ECAs may operate, exploring the way that certain design options might influence usability, interaction and learning experience outcomes across diverse situations and cultural context, is a considerable research issue to investigate [31]. An emerging need is the extension of modelling of intelligent agent-to-agent negotiations (within multiagent environments) toward human-like negotiation behaviour as embedded in the training context [24].…”

“…The topic of VAs and VUIs has been studied fairly intensively. Starting with dialog systems in natural language [32], extending to spoken language and integration of technical services in [5,26,17,15] to more design-driven and holistic views in [16,14,20,8,18,3,19]. There are many tutorials [21,1,23,27,4] promising the easy creation of such systems.…”
