Use of Arsenic Contaminated Irrigation Water for Lettuce Cropping: Effects on Soil, Groundwater, and Vegetal

Abstract: The present study investigated the effects of using arsenic (As) contaminated irrigation water in Lactuca sativa L. cropping. Two different arsenic concentrations, i.e., 25 and 85 μg L(-1) and two different soils, i.e., sandy and clay loam, were taken into account. We determined the arsenic mobility in the different soil fractions, its amount in groundwater, and the phytotoxicity and genotoxicity. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and inductively coupled plasma (ICP) were used to assess the lettuce metabolic pr… Show more

“…Metabolomics has been used to solve food quality problems in fruits and other plants and to explore pesticide, genotype and environmental effects on plant growth (Spraul et al 2009;Zhang et al 2012;Bernillon et al 2013;Pereira et al 2014); to understand geographical and transgenic effects (Son et al 2009;Sobolev et al 2010;Picone et al 2011;Kausch et al 2012;Kim et al 2013); and to reveal the effects of environmental contaminants (Karmakar et al 2009;Hédiji et al 2010;Beni et al 2011;Zhang et al 2012). In the current study, it was used to examine the individual and combined effects of chlorsulfuron and Cd on maize seedlings.…”

“…This result perhaps was due to the very high amounts of amorphous Fe and Al oxides in the study soils and the aging effect reduced the bioavailability of As in high As-contaminated soils of the Guandu Plain (unpublished data). Beni et al [32] cultivated lettuce in sandy soil irrigated with water that had different As levels (19–104 μg/L). The results also showed that there was no difference in lettuce biomass between treatments.…”

“…Furthermore, McBride (1995) reported that As formed strong bonds with Fe and Al oxides, clay, and OM in soils. Beni et al (2011) and Abedin et al (2002) observed that in sandy soils As is five times more phytotoxic than in clay soils. In the present study, Fe, Al, Ca ++ , clay and OM contents were relatively higher in Kirkham than in Sunset soils (Table 1).…”

“…Arsenic is an extremely toxic naturally occurring metalloid (Naujokas et al, 2013;Zhai et al, 2017;Beni et al, 2011). Its uptake by plants is species dependent (Huang et al, 2013;Matschullat, 2000), and is influenced by As oxidation state (Campbell and Nordstrom, 2014), the concentration of soil As and the soil's physical property (Jiang and Singh, 1994), and the presence of other ions (Zhou et al, 2005).…”
