Landscape analysis with transects, in the Marina Baja area (province of Alicante, Spain), has contributed to establish the influence of different landscape matrices and some environmental gradients on wild rabbit Oryctolagus cuniculus (Linnaeus, 1758) (Mammalia: Leporidae) abundance (kilometric abundance index, KAI). Transects (n = 396) were developed to estimate the abundance of this species in the study area from 2006 to 2008. Our analysis shows that rabbits have preferences for a specific land use matrix (irrigated: KAI = 3.47 ± 1.14 rabbits/km). They prefer the coastal area (KAI = 3.82 ± 1.71 rabbits/km), which coincides with thermo-Mediterranean (a bioclimatic belt with a tempered winter and a hot and dry summer with high human density), as opposed to areas in the interior (continental climate with lower human occupation). Their preference for the southern area of the region was also noted (KAI = 8.22 ± 3.90 rabbits/km), which coincides with the upper semi-arid area, as opposed to the northern and intermediate areas (the north of the region coinciding with the upper dry and the intermediate area with the lower dry). On the other hand, we found that the number of rabbits increased during the 3-year study period, with the highest abundance (KAI = 2.71 ± 1.30 rabbits/km) in May. Thus, this study will enable more precise knowledge of the ecological factors (habitat variables) that intervene in the distribution of wild rabbit populations in a poorly studied area.

RESUMENEl estudio sobre la trayectoria histórica de los ecosistemas es necesario para comprender su capacidad de respuesta ante determinadas perturbaciones. A partir de esta idea, el presente trabajo analiza las transformaciones del paisaje ocurridas en los últimos 400 años en la Serra d'Aitana, un espacio singular que reúne las principales caracterís-ticas ecológicas e históricas de la montaña media mediterránea europea. El artículo sintetiza los resultados de una larga investigación en la que se han empleado numerosas fuentes documentales, orales y de trabajo de campo. Los resultados se ofrecen en cinco periodos (hasta 1650, 1650-1850, 1850-1920, 1920-1960 y 1960-2010) que permiten comprobar la intensidad de los cambios ocurridos a partir de cinco procesos: expansión de la superficie agraria, ganadería, incendios forestales, aprovechamientos forestales y repoblaciones forestales. De esta forma se obtiene un marco analítico general que permitirá centrar posteriores estudios de detalle en las montañas béticas valencianas. ABSTRACTThe study of how ecosystems develop is essential in order to understand their capacity of response to specific disturbances. Based on this idea, this paper analyses the transformations that have occurred over the last 400 years in the Serra d'Aitana, a singular area combining the typical ecological and historical features of a European Mediterranean mountain range. The article summarises the results of extensive research which has used numerous sources, both documented and oral, along with field work. The results are presented in five periods (up to 1650, 1650-1850, 1850-1920, 1920-1960 and 1960-2010) which check the intensity of the changes from five processes: expansion of agricultural land, livestock, forest fires, forestry and reforestation. This provides a general analytical framework which will facilitate the work of future, more detailed studies of the Valencia Baetic mountain range. Crop damages by wildlife is a frequent form of human-wildlife conflict. Identifying areas where the risk of crop damages is highest is pivotal to set up preventive measures and reduce conflict. Species distribution models are routinely used to predict species distribution in response of environmental changes. The aim of this paper was assessing whether species distribution models can allow to identify the areas most at risk of crop damages, helping to set up management strategies aimed at the mitigation of human-wildlife conflicts. We obtained data on wild boar Sus scrofa damages to crops in the Alta Murgia National Park, Southern Italy, and related them to landscape features, to identify areas where the risk of wild boar damages is highest. We used MaxEnt to build species distribution models. We identified the spatial scale at which landscape mostly affects the distribution damages, and optimized the regularization parameter of models, through an information-theoretic approach based on AIC. Wild boar damages quickly increased in the period 2007-2011; cereals and legumes were the crops more affected. Large areas of the park have a high risk of wild boar damages. The risk of damages was related to low cover of urban areas or olive grows, intermediate values of forest cover, and high values of shrubland cover within a 2-km radius. Temporally independent validation data demonstrated that models can successfully predict damages in the future. Species distribution models can accurately identify the areas most at risk of wildlife damages, as models calibrated on data collected during only a subset of years correctly predicted damages in the subsequent year.
