Use of path analysis in industrial/organizational psychology: Criticisms and suggestions.

Abstract: Path analysis or structural equation modeling is a technique for testing the consequences of proposed causal relationships among a set of variables. The technique rests on specific procedures and important assumptions (uncorrelated residuals, one-way causality, linearity, additivity, interval measures). These assumptions, along with the problem of multicollinearity, are discussed and specific techniques offered to deal with them. Path analysis studies from the industrial/organizational psychology literature ar… Show more

“…The correlations between the independent variables indicate, possibly, the existence of multicollinearity, although R. S. Billings and P. S. Wroten suggest that correlation coefficients lower than .8 do not indicate serious multicollinearity problems. 31 The response rate (89.5%) also was re assuring, reducing the problems intro duced by nonresponse bias. This was achieved by personally delivering the sur veys to be self-administered and assuring respondents of confidentiality.…”

“…Any observed relationship may be partly or fully driven by omitted variables and the estimated relation could be higher, lower, or of a different sign than the actual causal relation. The confounding effect of endogeneity on estimates is one of the biggest methodological problems in management and psychology research today (Antonakis, et al, 2010;Bascle, 2008;Billings & Wroten, 1978;Duncan, Magnusson, & Ludwig, 2004;Gennetian, Magnuson, & Morris, 2008;Hamilton & Nickerson, 2003;Larcker & Rusticus, 2010). It is a problem that has mostly been ignored by researchers in the past and mostly plagues non-experimental research (but also experimental research too, for example, when testing mediation in the case of an endogenous mediator).…”

“…NNFI values are used to compare the posited model (i.e., researcher's model) to the null model (Garson, 2009 (Billings & Wroten, 1978;Garson, 2009). One limitation of standardized beta weights is that they do not allow for comparison across samples or studies (Gelfand, Mensinger, & Tenhave, 2009;Little, Card, Bovaird, Preacher & Crandall, 2007;Stage, Carter, Nora, 2004).…”
