Pfaffia glomerata contains high levels of β-ecdysone, which has shown a range of beneficial pharmacological effects. The present study demonstrated that inflorescences of P. glomerata contain other important bioactive compounds in addition to β-ecdysone. The identification of compounds from inflorescences using liquid chromatography coupled with electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS/MS) was performed for the first time. The eight compounds identified were β-ecdysone, flavonoid glycosides such as quercetin-3-O-glucoside, kaempferol-3-O-glucoside and kaempferol-3-O-(6-pcoumaroyl)-glucoside, oleanane-type triterpenoid saponins such as ginsenoside Ro and chikusetsusaponin IV, in addition to oleanonic acid and gluconic acid. This study provided information on the phytochemicals contained in P. glomerata inflorescences revealing the potential application of this plant part as raw material for the phytotherapeutic and cosmetic industries.

Medicinal plant species are genetically engineered to obtain higher production of biomass and specific secondary metabolites, which can be used in the pharmaceutical industry. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of Pfaffia glomerata (Spreng.) Pedersen tetraploid hydroalcoholic extract on the liver of adult Swiss mice. The extract was prepared from the plant roots and given to the animals by gavage, for 42 days. The experimental groups were treated with water (control), Pfaffia glomerata tetraploid hydroalcoholic extract (100, 200 and 400 mg/kg) and Pfaffia glomerata tetraploid hydroalcoholic extract discontinuously (200 mg/kg). The last group received the extract every 3 days, for 42 days. The oxidative status, mineral dynamics, and cell viability were analysed. The liver weight and the number of viable hepatocytes were reduced, despite the increased cell’s number. Increased levels of malondialdehyde and nitric oxide, and changes in iron, copper, zinc, potassium, manganese and sodium levels were observed. aspartate aminotransferase levels were increased while alanine aminotransferase levels were decreased due to BGEt intake. Our results showed that BGEt induced alterations of oxidative stress biomarkers leading to liver injury, which was associated with a reduction in the number of hepatocytes.

Ethnobotanical inventory of medicinal plants used by specialists in the treatment and cure of diseases in riverside communities in the amazon

The research aimed to learn about the socioeconomic profile and medicinal plants used by local specialists from three riverside communities in the municipality of Porto de Moz, Pará, Brazil. The data was collected with 10 specialists through a semi-structured questionnaire. Local specialists are mostly women (80%), with low income and a low education level. 83 medicinal ethnospecies were identified. The Lamiaceae and Fabaceae families were the most representative in the study area with 9 and 10 species, respectively. The Dysphania ambrosioides (18%) species was the most referenced one. Most of the recommendations regarding use of the medication are related to unclassified signs and symptoms, with 48 references. The young members in the communities exhibit low interest in medicinal plants. The precariousness of local public health services enhances the use of medicinal plants. The medicinal knowledge of local specialists assists in the prevention, treatment and cure of illnesses based on traditional medicine empiricism.
