On‐farm seed priming has been reported to improve emergence, crop establishment, and yield besides improving economic benefits in dryland agriculture. These benefits can further be improved by fertilizer micro‐dosing. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of on‐farm seed priming and fertilizer micro‐dosing on the agronomic and economic returns of maize (Zea mays L. var. Melkassa‐2) in semi‐arid agro‐ecological conditions in Ethiopia. The experiments consisted of four treatments: no priming and no fertilizer; no priming and fertilizer; priming and no fertilizer; and priming and fertilizer. The experiments were conducted in three locations viz., Melkassa, Ziway, and Hawassa in the central Rift Valley. Analysis of variance for each location was performed separately at p ˂ .05. Results of each location were similar over the experimentation years, and hence, there was no need for carrying out combined analysis. Regardless of fertilization, primed plants showed faster emergence; better uniform crop stands; more vigorous plants; earlier flowering; earlier harvest; and higher grain and stover yield than no primed plants. Germination was 2–3 days earlier, and flowering and maturation of primed plants were 10 to 13 days earlier than no primed plants. Average grain yield increased by 11, 8, and 6% in Melkassa, Ziway, and Hawassa, respectively, by priming over no priming. Fertilizer micro‐dosing combined with priming further improved most of the agronomic characters. Fertilizer micro‐dosing combined with priming increased the average grain yield by 75, 69, and 33% in Melkassa, Ziway, and Hawassa, respectively. The economic returns also increased in the same pattern as the agronomic responses for priming, micro‐dosing or their combination. To realize the potential of seed priming of increasing agronomic performances, future research and development efforts should focus on understanding the possible underling physiological and biochemical basis of this poorly understood process with the different priming techniques.

Acta Universitatis Agriculturae et Silviculturae Mendelianae Brunensis, 2013, LXI, No. 6, pp. 1817-1822 The infl uence of Agrisorb (water solution 1, 3, 5 g/l) on lettuce and onion seed germination was tested in diff erent moisture conditions (30 ml and 15 ml of water in germination box). Variants with reduced water level germinated much more slowly (MGT parameter) than standard variants, though diff erences in total germination at the end of the test were insignifi cant. Treated variants of lettuce seeds showed a statistically signifi cant increase in germination energy (GE) on the fi rst day (GE1, both water levels), but a signifi cant decrease on the second day (columns GE2, 15 ml). Higher doses of Agrisorb slowed lettuce seed germination (GE2, 30 ml, dose 5 g) signifi cantly, similarly see GE2 (15 ml, doses 1, 3, 5 g). This slowdown was apparent for GE3 (both water amount) as well. A similar but insignifi cant eff ect was evident for onions. There was an infl uence of cultivar and seed vigour on sensitivity to water stress. The hydrogel application infl uenced germination of lettuce and onion seeds. Treated lettuce seeds germinated faster than non-treated control in the beginning of germination process. This eff ect was not recorded in case of slowly germinated onion seed lots. Although infl uence of Agrisorb was positive in the beginning, higher doses of hydrogel reduced germination energy of treated seed lots (for example GE2, GE4) of both crops in comparison with non-treated control. Higher doses of hydrogel caused longer MGT of lettuce and onion as well.

Poor crop stand is one of the most common abiotic constrain faced by vegetable growers of developing countries due to production of low quality seed. Multiple factors, especially abiotic stresses and seed dormancy restrict seed germination and seedling growth. Up till now, seed priming is still considered as effective and cheapest method to enhance seed germination and to mitigate the drastic effect of abiotic stresses. Manipulation of seed hydration through solid matrix priming technique not only improves germination characteristics but also stimulates biochemical processes like restoration of metabolic activities through protein and nucleic acid synthesis (RNA and DNA), increases enzymatic activities, and improves the storage of organic substances in germinating seeds. It was also found effective in improving seedling establishment under salinity, drought, and temperature stresses by activating defence mechanisms. Therefore, this review highlights the role of solid matrix priming in improving the germination and stand establishment of vegetable crops under suboptimal conditions.
