Use of somatic cell counts and California mastitis test results from individual quarter milk samples to detect subclinical intramammary infection in dairy cattle from a herd with a high bulk tank somatic cell count

Abstract: Results suggest that neither CMT score nor SCC is sensitive enough to be useful as a screening test for identifying infected mammary quarters among dairy cattle in a herd with high bulk tank SCC.

“…The proportion (nearly 80%) of pathogen-positive cultures in foremilk samples was very high compared with data reported in conventional farming in our region (García, 1990) and most studies throughout the world (Hogan et al, 1989a,b;Wilson et al, 1997;Middleton et al, 2004;Tenhagen et al, 2006;Piepers et al, 2007). In most of these cultures C. bovis (69%) was the pathogen involved.…”

“…Embora utilizado amplamente por laticínios no mundo, pesquisas demonstraram que o teste apresenta uma baixa sensibilidade para a detecção de mastites sub-clínicas, com valores entre 56% e 76% (Sargeant et al, 2001;Middleton et al, 2004 (Safi et al, 2009), visto que durante a inflamação do úbere ocorre uma resposta de fase aguda clássica, com alta produção hepática de haptoglobina e sua secreção na circulação sanguínea (Vels et al, 2009). …”

“…Mastitic cows appeared frequently in herd A and herd B, whereas only a few cases of mastitis were observed in the control herd, herd C. Outlines of each herd are given in Table 1. Mastitis was diagnosed using the California Mastitis Test (CMT) according to a previous report [12]. Mild signs, such as flakes or clots in the milk, were observed in the quarters of some cows with mastitis, but systemic clinical signs, such as fever, depression, or serious pain in the mammary gland, were not observed in any of the mastitic cows or other examined cows.…”
