The objective of this paper is to evaluate the microbiological state and the dynamics of the mammary infections of organic farms in North Spain to discover if the high somatic cell count (SCC) observed in these farms is associated to a high incidence of mastitis. Microbiological cultures and SCC were performed in 8,496 foremilk samples collected from 160 cows in five representative organic farms from February 2006 to January 2008. Even though 79.3% of cultures were positive, only 21.2% of the total fit our diagnosis of mastitis (clinical, subclinical and chronic). The great prevalence of Corynebacterium bovis (teat canal-region pathogen) in the positive cultures that did not fit the mastitis diagnosis criteria (nearly 70%) compared with those that did (27%) was found to be related to lack of post-milking teat disinfection. The study prevalence of mastitis was 69.2% (66.7% subclinical mastitis, 27.8% clinical mastitis); the mean monthly prevalence was 47.4%; the mean monthly incidence was 12.9% and the mean duration of infection was 3.84 ± 3.98 months The high SCC in foremilk samples from old cows (three or more lactations) not diagnosed as mastitis compared to the heifers, reflects a worsening health status of the animals over time. When compared with the conventional sector in Northern Spain, these parameters indicate a poorer udder health in the studied organic herds with a high presence of chronic subclinical processes.

RESUMO.A haptoglobina é a principal proteína de fase aguda em ruminantes, sendo o seu uso amplamente pesquisado na clínica médica animal como biomarcador precoce de processos inflamatórios, infecciosos, danos teciduais e condições de estresse. Isto se deve ao fato de seus valores sanguíneos se apresentarem próximos de 0,05 mg/ml em bovinos saudáveis, e se elevarem em mais de 100 vezes durante a ocorrência das condições patológicas, antes mesmo que surjam sinais clínicos e ocorram alterações no leucograma. Com estas características, a haptoglobina apresenta um alto potencial para uso em diferentes segmentos da cadeia produtiva pecuária brasileira, sendo o objetivo desta revisão de literatura compilar os trabalhos científicos que utilizaram a esta proteína como bioindicador de saúde animal na bovinocultura de corte e leite. Verificou-se que, na pecuária de corte, a quantificação da haptoglobina pode contribuir com a triagem dos animais na inspeção ante morten, permitindo a identificação dos animais com doença subclínica que não foram diagnosticados pela inspeção visual; pode também contribuir para a verificação do bem-estar animal nos momentos após o transporte e pré-abate, evitandose o abate de animais com possíveis quadros de estresse que possam alterar a qualidade dos produtos cárneos. Na pecuária leiteira, a haptoglobina pode contribuir diretamente com a identificação de vacas com diferentes níveis de mastite clínica e subclínica, além de permitir a identificação de lotes de leite com alta concentração de células somáticas ou oriundos de rebanhos acometidos por agentes infecciosos. Para que seja fomentada a sua inclusão como ferramenta de monitoramento dentro cadeia produtiva pecuária brasileira, para uso por ambos médicos veterinários e estabelecimentos industriais de produtos de origem animal, recomenda-se a realização de estudos de validação do uso da haptoglobina como bioindicador de saúde animal em parceria com empresas do setor, de forma que a sua utilidade prática seja verificada diretamente pelos profissionais envolvidos.Palavras chave: diagnóstico, pecuária, proteína de fase aguda, sanidade animal Applicability of haptoglobin as a health bioindicator in beef and dairy cattle ABSTRACT. ABSTRACT. To clarify the relationship between cellular immune status and nutritive condition, feeding program, blood profiles, and leukocyte populations were analyzed in two dairy herds experiencing frequent mastitis. Fourteen of the 35 lactating cows in herd A, and 18 of the 50 lactating cows in herd B scored positive on the California Mastitis Test (CMT), and 3 of the 73 lactating cows were CMT positive in herd C, which was the control. All herds were evaluated during five different milking stages, and blood was collected from five cows at each stage. With regard to feed content, the percentages of total digestible nutrients (TDN) and crude protein (CP) were found to be lower in herds A and B than in herd C. Levels of serum total cholesterol and blood urea nitrogen were lower in herds A and B than those in herd C. Neutrophil counts in herds A and B were increased compared to the neutrophil counts in herd C. On the other hand, the numbers of CD3 + T cells and CD14-MHC class + cells were lower in herd A and B than in herd C. A decrease in peripheral lymphocytes and undernourishment were observed in the herds with frequent occurring mastitis. KEY WORDS: dairy herd, leukocyte population, mastitis, nutritive conditions.
