Use of stereo baited remote underwater video systems to estimate the presence and size of white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias)

Abstract: Stereo baited remote underwater video systems (stereo-BRUVs) are commonly used to assess fish assemblages and, more recently, to record the localised abundance and size of sharks. The present study investigated the occurrence and size of white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias) in the near-shore environment off Bennett’s Beach, part of a known nursery area for the species in central New South Wales, Australia. Six stereo-BRUV units were deployed approximately fortnightly between August and December 2015 for perio… Show more

“…Drones have also proven useful for behavioural observations and fine-scale tracking of various shark species [30,31,42,47]. Typically, obtaining data on shark movement and behaviour has largely been conducted using boat-based observations [33,48,49], underwater video [50], or more commonly, satellite and/or acoustic tracking methods [51,52]. However, in comparison to satellite tracking methods, drones provide highly detailed information at much finer scales.…”

“…Approximately 1 kg of crushed pilchards (Sardinops neopilchardus) was used as bait, which were mashed into a plastic mesh bait bag attached to the end of each bait-pole (∼1.5 m distance from the frame) to attract fish to the field of view (Harvey et al, 2007). Stereo video is a proven method for accurately measuring fish lengths of various size classes (Harasti et al, 2016).…”

“…In Australia, white sharks are known to occur from Northwest Cape, Western Australia, through southern waters to the central coast of Queensland (Last & Stevens 2009). In eastern Australia, studies have been focussed at 2 nursery areas where juvenile white sharks (< 3 m) can be found in relatively high abundance (Bruce & Bradford 2012, Harasti et al 2017a). An analysis of short-term (less than 1 yr) satellite tracking of juvenile sharks from these nursery areas supported their largely shelf-based distribution, but also identified some off-shelf excursions and trans-Tasman Sea movement (Bruce & Bradford 2012).…”
