Use ofLemna minor L. as a bioassay in allelopathy

Abstract: Investigations in allelopathy often require the use of a bioassay for evaluating limited quantities of potentially active growth regulators. A bioassay procedure was developed usingL. minor grown in 1.5-ml aliquots of nutrient medium with and without allelochemicals in wells of 24-well tissue culture cluster dishes with loose-fitting lids. Tests using six replications per treatment with several flavonoid compounds and derivatives of coumarin, benzoic acid, and cinnamic acid demonstrated that the bioassay was c… Show more

“…Inhibition mechanism of allelopathy occurs through complex metabolism process including cell division and elongation, growth regulation by inhibiting the growth regulator substances, nutrient uptake, photosynthesis, respiration, stomata opening, protein synthesis, carbon storage and pigment synthesis, membrane permeability, and alter the function of specific enzyme (Einhellig et al 1985). The addition of A. excelsa leaf and twig litter extract to yellow and P. urinaria did not affect significantly due to the good defense mechanism of Phyllanthus.…”

“…Cinnamic acid, ferulic acid, p-coumaric acid, and other phenylpropanoids commonly identified in the phenomenon of allelopathy are intermediates of bonification. Salicylic acid, in my experience the most growth inhibitory of the benzoic acid allelochemicals (74), appears to be an endogenous signal in systemic activation of plant defenses after a localized exposure to certain viral and fungal pathogens (75)(76)(77). It does not appear to be a signal compound in response to ultraviolet-C radiation (78).…”

“…Investigators frequently use several different assays in a screening procedure. We have employed a whole-plant Lemna bioassay because it is applicable with a small quantity of putative allelochemical and has sensitivity to effects on a range of physiology process (74,89). Physiological Effects.…”
