Useful Spectrokinetic Methods for the Investigation of Photochromic and Thermo-Photochromic Spiropyrans

Abstract: This review reports on the main results of a set of kinetic elucidation methods developed by our team over the last few years. Formalisms, procedures and examples to solve all possible AB photochromic and thermophotochromic kinetics are presented. Also, discussions of the operating conditions, the continuous irradiation experiment, the spectrokinetic methods testing with numerical integration methods, and the identifiability/distinguishability problems, are included.

“…The determination of the photochromic parameters, such as the number, nature, and kinetic and spectral properties of the transient species formed under irradiation is not a trivial task because the photoproducts are too labile to be isolated in many cases [28]. As an illustration, the kinetic behavior of the unimolecular systems is considered (e.g., spiropyrans, spiroxazines, dihydroindolizines, which are of major importance for applications to ophthalmic lenses) [29].…”

“…Kinetic of coloration was used to evaluate Sp-Mc and Mc-Mc phases of molecules with assumption that permanent existence of mono form; so, it would be rational to expect a first order kinetic of coloration. 29,30 The results showed a non-first order kinetics which supports double open form (Fig. 6).…”

“…Nevertheless, in the second case, the irradiation of a much thinner film (i.e. the film after stretching) led to a stronger spiropyran to merocyanine photoconversion owing to a much stronger irradiation energy per unit of film thickness [21][22][23][24]. The later effect was thus responsible for an increase in the maximum absorbance.…”
