A comprehensive two-dimensional (cross-shore) process-based numerical model of nearshore hydrodynamics (based on the Navier-Stokes equations, k-ε turbulence closure and the Volume-Of-Fluid method), beach morphology, and variable-density groundwater flow (SEAWAT-2000) was developed. This model, which was applied at the field scale, relaxes simplifications in existing models that do not include such detailed mechanistic descriptions. Numerical experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of varying aquifer, beach and wave characteristics (e.g., inland groundwater head, sand grain size, different wave heights and periods) on the coupled system. Spilling and plunging breakers on dissipative and intermediate beaches were simulated. For a given set of boundary conditions, the model was run for 1 y without the hydrodynamic sub-model to achieve a realistic salt-/freshwater interface. Then, the hydrodynamic component was run for 15 min and the model results analyzed. The main features considered were groundwater circulation, saltwater wedge position, in/exfiltration across the beach face, and beach morphology. The predictions of the numerical model agree well with existing understanding and experimental measurements. For an inland watertable that is lower than the still water level (SWL), such that the groundwater flow is mainly landward, on both coarse and fine sand beaches the addition of wave motion moves the saltwater wedge further landward. For an inland watertable that is higher than the SWL, the opposite behavior occurred. The numerical experiments showed that more sediment transport takes place on intermediate beaches than on dissipative beaches. In addition, beach profile variations are greater under plunging breakers, while coarse sand beaches are steeper than fine sand beaches for the same wave conditions. There is a strong correlation between in/exfiltration and beach face deposition/erosion for the coarse beaches, while in/exfiltration has a slight effect on sediment transport for fine beaches. The model is capable of simulating the short-term evolution of foreshore profile changes, and beach 3 watertable and saltwater wedge movement due to interactions between wave motion and coastal groundwater. Dải ven biển tỉnh Nam Định kéo dài từ Giao Thủy đến Nghĩa Hưng, trong những năm vừa qua đã phát hiện, thăm dò và khai thác nước trong thấu kính nước nhạt lớn trong tầng chứa nước Pleistocen và Neogen. Tuy nhiên, những nghiên cứu sâu hơn về sự hình thành của thấu kính nước nhạt quí giá này vẫn còn nhiều hạn chế.Theo kết quả quan trắc mực nước từ năm 1994 đến 2012, mực nước dưới đất trong tầng chứa nước Pleistocen đã suy giảm đến hơn 9 m và trung bình cho toàn vùng suy giảm từ 0,4m đến 0,7m mỗi năm [4]. Nguyên nhân hạ thấp mực nước chủ yếu là do khai thác, dẫn đến nguy cơ xâm nhập mặn gia tăng. Thêm vào đó, nằm ngay trên tầng chứa nước Pleistocen là lớp thấm nước yếu trầm tích biển có tổng hàm lượng chất rắn hòa tan (TDS) trong nước lỗ rỗng đạt hơn 30g/l (trong đó hàm lượng NaCl chiếm hơn 70%). Sự phân bố NaCl của nước lỗ rỗng trong lớp trầm tích biển theo chiều sâu phản ánh khả năng và mức độ xâm nhập mặn tầng chứa nước Pleistocen nói chung và thấu kính nước nhạt nói riêng. Phân tích các yếu tố ảnh hưởng đến sự phân bố này sẽ góp phần giải thích cơ chế xâm nhập mặn theo phương thẳng đứng do ảnh hưởng của lớp trầm tích biển trong vùng nghiên cứu. Khái quát vùng nghiên cứu Vị trí vùng nghiên cứuVùng nghiên cứu nằm ở phía đông nam đồng bằng Bắc bộ, bao gồm địa bàn các huyện Mỹ Lộc, Giao Thủy, Xuân Trường, Trực Ninh, Nam Trực, Ý Yên, Hải Hậu và Nghĩa Hưng thuộc tỉnh Nam Định. Đặc điểm địa chất Đệ tứ vùng nghiên cứu Thống Pleistocen Hệ tầng Lệ ChiHệ tầng Lệ Chi (Q 1 lc) có chiều sâu phân bố từ 79 đến 132,8m. Bề dày thay đổi từ 4 đến 26,2m. Các trầm tích của hệ tầng Lệ Chi phân bố trong các đới sụt kiến tạo kéo dài theo phương tây bắc -đông nam; thành phần thạch học gồm cát, bột, sét lẫn sạn. Về quan hệ địa tầng, các trầm tích của hệ tầng Lệ Chi phủ lên mặt bào mòn của hệ tầng Vĩnh Bảo và phía trên bị các trầm tích của hệ tầng Hà Nội phủ không chỉnh hợp (mặt cắt địa chất đặc trưng trong vùng nghiên cứu trên hình 1).
