This study aims to develop a mobile application prototype for self-monitoring. Exercising self-regulated learning is considered as one of the ways that can help students achieve their learning goals. One of the key components of self-regulated learning is self-monitoring, in which students could monitor their learning process. To make students get used to monitoring skill, a web-based application called self-monitoring tool was developed. User research was carried out by evaluating the existing web-based application via an interview. Findings from the interview were analyzed and used as requirements to develop the mobile application. By taking into account usability components and design principles, an interactive prototype of a mobile self-monitoring tool was designed for both student and instructor roles.

To assess the quality, acceptability and user experience of interactive applications, usability is one of the most integral quality attributes. However, large number of gaps and challenges exist in current usability practices causing the emergence of usability bugs at user end. The idea to bridge the gap between user and interactive product interaction serves as a motivation for this research. Existing usability gaps and challenges demand the need of a maturity model that should efficiently target the unaddressed deficiencies in the area of usability. This study aims to propose such a systematic and comprehensive maturity model, i.e., Usability Development Life Cycle (UDLC) model. To ensure easy and smooth implementation of proposed model, systematic and comprehensive set of guidelines are also proposed along with the model. The model is validated for its competency by applying on poor website and mobile application with weak usability and bad user experience. Execution of proposed model on the targeted samples resulted in enhanced usability with improved user satisfaction.

Research shows that Western and Chinese user instructions use visuals differently. Two basic tendencies may be discerned: Chinese manuals place more emphasis on visuals and their selection of visuals is less strictly confined to usability related functionality. This study investigates whether such cultural differences correspond to user preferences. Three hypotheses were tested: (a) Chinese users value pictures more than Western users; (b) Chinese users appreciate diverting, cartoon-like pictures more than Western users; and (c) Western users appreciate strictly instrumental pictures more than Chinese users. To test these hypotheses, a quasi-experiment (N ¼ 158) was conducted with cultural background as independent variable and appreciation for pictures as dependent variable. All participants rated 15 pictures, which were presented in the context of user instructions. All three hypotheses were confirmed. Cultural differences regarding the use of visuals should therefore be taken into account when localizing Western manuals for the Chinese market, or vice versa.
