Users' Responses to 2D and 3D Visualization Techniques in Urban Conservation Process

Abstract: This paper compares efficiency of two and threedimensional visualization techniques which are developed for representation of spatial content of an urban historic site. The aim of this paper is to measure users' perception regarding the performance of these visualization techniques. Methodology is based on a questionnaire which is gathering the user's responses regarding comprehension and perception level of the case area's characteristics. The case study, which was held in Zeyrek urban historic site, comprise… Show more

“…However, sometimes images or paintings are ambiguous and unclear (Garduño Freeman, 2010). Koramaz and Gulersoy (2011) argue that visualization technique efficiency is important for the perception of spatial content. Therefore, next to 2D maps, it is important to add images and 3D models for displaying spatial information.…”

“…3D VR-models also have benefits in relation to 2D models, e.g. better orientation [26]. To better support visual expression, photorealism is often sought, especially early on in the planning process, in order to communicate in the future -often with non-professionals [2, 9, and 13].…”

“…Even today, many architecture and manufacturing industries make intensive use of texts and technical 2D engineering drawings (Dori & Tombre, 1995;Yagmur-Kilimci, 2010;Opsahl, 2013). Studies (Tavanti & Lind, 2001;Kashihara, 2009;Yagmur-Kilimci, 2010;Gîrbacia, 2012;Agus, Bettio, Gobbetti, & Pintore, 2007;Ibrahim & Rahimian, 2010;Koramaz & Gülersoy, 2011) have compared differences between 2D and 3D visualization in several domains and the effect it has on human cognition.…”
