Using genotoxic and haematological biomarkers as an evidence of environmental contamination in the Ocoa River native fish, Villavicencio—Meta, Colombia

Abstract: The studies evaluating the impact of environmental pollution on aquatic organisms have had a growing concern in recent decades. The Ocoa River runs through Villavicencio city, receiving the wastewater produced in the city. To date studies reporting the effect and the consequences of Ocoa River pollution on aquatic organisms inhabiting this water body are unknown. Haematological and genotoxicity biomarkers were evaluated in peripheral blood of two native fish species Astyanax gr. bimaculatus and Aequidens metae… Show more

“…This finding is also consistent with the report of similar reduction in hematological parameters from different toxicological exposure studies and the association of such findings with genotoxicity and high micronucleus frequency in other studies (Corredor-Santamaría et al, 2016). This reduction along with the drop in the neutrophil count can be ascribed to damage to the bone marrow causing a reduced hematopoietic activity of the bone marrow and the modification of the hemopoietic cell division and maturation (Corredor-Santamaría et al, 2016).…”

“…To provide information on the impact of pollution on aquatic organisms, our research group has proposed the native neotropical cichlid fish Aequidens metae as a potential bioindicator, given its benthic and detritivorous habits, and its abundance and adaptability to laboratory conditions (Corredor-Santamaría et al, 2019;Santamaría et al, 2016).…”

“…The deliberate and or accidental discharge of insecticides into aquatic environment causes molecules of the insecticides to bind onto suspended particles and sediments, and accumulate in the aquatic environment. This increases exposure of non-targeted species to the chemicals threatening their survival via interacting with physiological processes and nuclear material that may lead to pathophysiological problem and carcinogenesis (Corredor-Santamaría et al, 2016). Piscine micronucleus test, a sensitive and suitable cytogenetic bioassay, has long been utilised to monitor chemical contaminants in aquatic environment.…”
