For more than a century, there has been an ongoing paradigm debate between qualitative and quantitative methodological communities that has led to a growing interest in the mixed methods approach. This article seeks to contribute to this ongoing discussion by presenting results of a mixed methods study employed to explore gender issues in the access, application, and attitudes toward information communication technology (ICT) in higher education institutions in Papua New Guinea (PNG). The data presented here involved more than 900 students and faculty members. In each of the studied aspects of staffs' and students' interactions with ICT, mixed methods methodology provided a platform for deeper exploration of gender issues that otherwise would not have been discovered. Although quantitative data showed little statistically significant differences in the access to and application of ICT, qualitative data revealed deep inequalities rooted in a PNG male-dominated culture. In terms of participants' attitudes toward ICT, qualitative analyses not only reaffirmed the statistical results but also enriched understanding of demonstrated attitudes by providing a platform for an in-depth discussion about the positive, negative, and ambivalent perceptions and beliefs held by the staff and students in tertiary institutions.

Öz. Bu çalışmada lise öğretmenlerinin mesleki değerlere ilişkin görüşlerinin çeşitli değişkenler açısından incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Nicel ve nitel araştırma yöntemlerine yer verilen "karma araştırma" modeli niteliğinde olan araştırmanın hedef evrenini, İstanbul Anadolu yakası sınırları içinde yer alan resmi ortaöğretim kurumlarındaki öğretmenler oluşturmaktadır. Tabakalı örnekleme yöntemi ile Kadıköy, Ümraniye ve Sultanbeyli ilçeleri örneklem olarak belirlenmiştir. Bu ilçelerin ortaöğretim okullarında görev yapan 461 öğretmenin ankete verdikleri cevaplar değerlendirmeye alınmıştır. Çalışmanın nitel bölümünde, amaçlı örnekleme yöntemi seçilmiş olup strateji olarak kartopu ve maksimum çeşitlilik stratejileri kullanılmıştır. Aynı ilçelerin ortaöğretim okullarında görev yapan 30 öğretmen çalışmanın nitel kısmına katılmıştır. Araştırmaya katılanların bağımsız değişkenlere göre mesleki değerlere ilişkin görüşlerini belirlemek için t-Testi ve Anova kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın nitel kısmında katılımcılar ile görüşme yapılmış, ardından görüşme dökümleri içerik analizine tabi tutulmuştur. Kadın öğretmenlerin mesleki değerleri erkek öğretmenlerden daha yüksek çıkmaktadır. Okullardaki öğretmenlerin ağırlıklı olarak hangi kıdem yılında bulunduğu ve sahip olunan mesleki değerlerin neler olduğu tespit edilmek suretiyle okullar kırmızı, sarı ve yeşil okullar şeklinde üç gruba ayrılmıştır. Lisansüstü eğitim alan öğretmenlerin mesleki değerleri lisans düzeyinde olanlara kıyasla daha yüksek olduğu tespit edilmiştir.Anahtar Kelimeler: Değerler, mesleki değerler, kırmızı okullar, sarı okullar, yeşil okullar Abstract. The purpose of this study is to analyse the factors affecting viewpoints of high school teachers towards professional values. The research which consists of quantitative and qualitative research methods has the characteristics of "mixed survey" model. Teachers working in public secondary schools located in the Anatolian side of Istanbul form the target universe of the research. Kadıkoy, Umraniye and Sultanbeyli districts and stratified sampling method were selected to form the sample. The answers given to the research questionnaire by 461 teachers working in secondary schools in the aforementioned districts were taken into consideration. For the qualitative stage of the study, purposive sampling was chosen and maximum variety and snowball sampling methods were used as the strategy. 30 teachers working in the high schools in the same districts were involved in the qualitative stage of the study. In order to determine the opinions of the participants in relation to professional values according to independent variables, t-Test and Anova were applied. In the qualitative stage of the study, the participants were interviewed and interview notes were analysed with content analysis. Özet -Bu araştırmanın amacı, fen bilimleri öğretmen adaylarının sosyobilimsel argümantasyon kalitelerinin tartışılan konu bağlamına göre değişimini incelemektir. Araştırmaya, üçüncü sınıfta öğrenim gören 27 fen bilimleri öğretmen adayı katılmıştır. Araştırmaya katılan fen bilimleri öğretmen adayları içerisinden, 11 hafta süren uygulama sürecinin başında bilimin doğası anlayışlarına göre seçilen 12 katılımcı, dörder kişilik üç gruba ayrılmışlardır. Gruplarda yer alan öğretmen adayları, sosyobilimsel argümantasyon sürecinde 'elektrikli otomobil üretimi', 'cep telefonları insan hayatını tehdit ediyor' ve 'altın pirinç' isimli senaryolar aracılığıyla argümanlar oluşturmuşlardır. Grupların bu senaryolar doğrultusunda yaptıkları argümantasyonların nitel analizi metodolojik bir araç yardımıyla çözümlenirken, konu bağlamının sosyobilimsel argümantasyon kalitesi üzerindeki etkisinin istatistiksel anlamlılığını belirlemek için ise SPSS 20 paket programında bulunan Kruskal Wallis-H testi kullanılmıştır. Nitel ve nicel veri analizlerinden elde edilen bulgular, en kaliteli argümantasyonların 'altın pirinç' isimli senaryo bağlamında yapıldığını göstermiştir. En düşük argümantasyon kalitesinin tespit edildiği senaryo bağlamı ise 'cep telefonları insan hayatını tehdit ediyor' adlı senaryodur. Bu araştırmada ulaşılan sonuçlar, ilgili literatür doğrultusunda tartışılmıştır. Sonuç ve TartışmaNitel ve nicel veri analizlerinden elde edilen bulgular, en kaliteli argümantasyonların "altın pirinç" isimli senaryo bağlamında yapıldığını göstermiştir. En düşük argümantasyon kalitesinin tespit edildiği senaryo bağlamı ise "cep telefonları insan hayatını tehdit ediyor" adlı senaryodur.Fen bilimleri öğretmen adaylarının sosyobilimsel argümantasyon kalitesinin konu bağlamına göre değişimini inceleme amaçlı yapılan bu çalışmada, söz konusu iki değişken arasında anlamlı bir farklılık bulunduğu tespit edilmiştir. Bu sonuç ve mevcut literatürde belirtilenler, bu araştırma alanına yönelik daha fazla çalışılma yapılması gerektiğini ortaya çıkarmaktadır.Bu nedenle özellikle de ulusal literatüre katkı sağlamak için, bu çalışmanın bağlamı aynı kalmak kaydıyla fen bilgisi öğretmen adayları ile daha çok araştırma yapılabilir. Abstract -The aim of this study is to investigate the change of pre-service science teachers' argumentation quality in relation to the context of argumentation. 27 third class pre-service science teachers participated in this study. 12 participants were divided into three groups, each containing 4 participants, according to their nature of science understandings at the beginning of the implementation process, which lasted for 11 weeks. These pre-service science teachers mounted argumentations in relation to the argumentation scenarios like 'production of electric scenario. The results of this study were discussed within the context of related literature.
