Using peristomal body profile assessment to improve leakage-related quality of life for individuals with an ostomy

Abstract: Background: Improper fitting between peristomal body profile and ostomy product(s) is one of the main reasons for leakage among individuals with an ostomy. Aim: To evaluate clinical usability of the Body Assessment Tool developed by Coloplast that is available free of charge. The aim was also to study how changing to product(s) that were best suited to an individual, guided by peristomal body profile, affected the number of leakages and individuals' quality of life. Methods: The study consisted of questionnair… Show more

“…Proper assessment of the peristomal body profile is important for the selection of the most suitable pouching system for the individual needs. 13,16 For example, the Peristomal Body Profile Assessment Tool is a multistep guide helping with the selection of pouching systems that in part is based on patient's abdominal topography. When a group of nurses used this tool for selection of pouching systems, patients experienced significantly fewer leakage incidents and reported concomitant improvements in QoL.…”

“…The abdominal topography around the ostomy varies considerably between individuals and may be accompanied with creases and folds that can make it difficult to secure a tight seal between skin and barrier. “…Moreover, a recent scoping review suggests that strenghtening the role of stoma care nurses could impact the healthcare system positively by increasing the quality of healthcare services provided and the quality of life for the persons living with an ostomy [ 42 ]. Lastly, a proper fit between the peristomal body profile and the ostomy product(s) guided by a stoma care nurse has been shown to reduce the number of leakages and in turn reduce the incidence of PSCs [ 43 , 44 ].…”
