Using POSS reagents to reduce hydrophobic character in polypropylene nanocomposites

Abstract: Three POSS reagents (1,2-propanediolisobutyl POSS, glycidylisooctyl POSS, and triglycidylisobutyl POSS, all 5 wt%) are incorporated into a commercial isotactic polypropylene, PP. Infrared and Raman spectroscopy show that the blending has been successful as evidenced by the presence of Si-O-Si bands at 1098-1110 cm À1 , which are not present in the base polymer. The inclusion of 5 wt% of the various POSS reagents leads to a general increase in the loss modulus at the T g (e.g. the greatest increase being from c… Show more

“…This finding can be explained by the theory of gelation where the presence of the plasticizer weakened the polymer structure thus improves the flexibility of the PLA biopolymer [8]. The low weight of molecular plasticizer molecules reduced and disrupted the polymers interaction which makes the polymer chain hold together [9][10].…”

“…The elemental composition and the distribution of the elements (C, O, and Si) on the cross-section of the virgin surface at around 300 microns of the film clearly demonstrate dispersion of POSS moiety into the synthesized block copolymers. Since the properties of the nanocomposite materials can be tuned by the degree of dispersion of nanofiller, 37 it is noteworthy to learn that POSS pendants are uniformly distributed in the …”

“…On the other hand, adopting oapPOSS for surface modication of GO can lead to the enhanced hydrophobicity because the POSS derivatives was reported to be the effective hydrophobic agents. 39,40 This is also possibly benecial to the improvement in the compatibility and hence the mechanical performance of FR PP composite from another point of view.…”
