Using Spontaneous Imbibition to Evaluate the Hydrocarbon Migration and Accumulation Potential of Shale Reservoirs: A Case Study of the Permian Fengcheng Formation in the Mahu Sag, Junggar Basin

Abstract: Spontaneous imbibition (SI) has been used widely to characterize shale wettability and pore structures, which can significantly affect the migration and accumulation processes of shale oil. However, the application of SI in the enrichment mechanism of shale oil is quite limited. Therefore, focusing on the Permian Fengcheng Formation shale deposited in an alkaline lake environment in the Mahu Sag of Junggar Basin, this study conducts systematic SI experiments with complementary experiments such as contact-angle… Show more

“…Adjacent to the western perimeter of the sag lie the Wuxia Fault Zone, Kebai Fault Belt, and Zhongguai Uplift, arranged from north to south. Conversely, the eastern sector of the depression comprises the Shiyingtan Uplift, Yingxi Sag, Sangequan Uplift, Xiayan Uplift, and Dabasong Uplift, in sequential order [32][33][34]. Previous investigations [23,34,35], alongside empirical exploration endeavors, affirm the Fengcheng Formation as a principal oil-yielding stratum within the Mahu Sag.…”

“…Conversely, the eastern sector of the depression comprises the Shiyingtan Uplift, Yingxi Sag, Sangequan Uplift, Xiayan Uplift, and Dabasong Uplift, in sequential order [32][33][34]. Previous investigations [23,34,35], alongside empirical exploration endeavors, affirm the Fengcheng Formation as a principal oil-yielding stratum within the Mahu Sag. Throughout the depositional epoch of the Fengcheng Formation, alternating seasonal humid and arid conditions prevailed, contributing to high salinity levels in the lake waters.…”

“…The western margin of the Mahu Sag is adjacent to the Wuxia fault zone and the Kebai fault zone, the southern margin is connected to the Zhongguai Uplift, the eastern margin is next to the Basong Uplift and the Xiayan Uplift, and the northern margin is next to the Shiyingtan Uplift. The Mahu Sag has an area of about 5000 km 2 , , as shown in Figure a.…”
