Using the soundscape approach to develop a public space in Berlin - perception and evaluation

Abstract: In Berlin the Soundscape Project "Nauener Platz" is carried out to rebuild a difficult public space into a space which is dominated by social freedom. A designed space related procedure is developed following the Soundscape approach, which will provide acoustical indicators and parameters describing urban and other outdoor living areas with respect to physical conditions and their relevance for life. The measurement of outdoor sound quality will take into consideration not only the sound pressure but also the … Show more

“…are main species commonly appearing in summer time, bringing rich birdsongs to the study area. It is noted that the species of bird in terms of the effect of their songs on soundscape preference is of high importance, as shown by SchulteFortkamp et al [27], during a redevelopment of Nauener Platz in Berlin. Figure 3 shows some typical spectra on site W12, W14 and W21, based on 4-minute sound recordings.…”

“…The identified landscape indicators could be used by planners to compare different planning schemes for a bird friendly environment, although further tests are still needed with more case studies. Birdsong information involving more detailed bird species, considering the user profile, and response from the local community would also be necessary in practice [27,48,49].…”

“…Soundscape and acoustic satisfaction are important parts of overall physical environmental satisfaction [1][2][3][4]. The study of urban soundscape [5][6][7][8][9], as well as of urban public open spaces [10] has been very extensive. Throughout the soundscape research of public open spaces with different functions and in different regions, the soundscape framework has been gradually established, in terms of sound, space, people and environment [11].…”

“…For example, the Greater London Authority is actively promoting several practical exemplar soundscape projects [6], and the GLA has also hosted a number of conferences/workshops relating to soundscape. The city of Berlin is promoting the soundscape research with regard to its application concerning action plans and public places, and a successful project has been completed [7][8][9]. The city of Antwerp is using a soundscape approach to improve the acoustic environment in a new development area [10].…”
