Polyethylene (PE) is one the most used plastics worldwide for a wide range of applications due to its good mechanical and chemical resistance, low density, cost efficiency, ease of processability, non-reactivity, low toxicity, good electric insulation, and good functionality. However, its high flammability and rapid flame spread pose dangers for certain applications. Therefore, different flame-retardant (FR) additives are incorporated into PE to increase its flame retardancy. In this review article, research papers from the past 10 years on the flame retardancy of PE systems are comprehensively reviewed and classified based on the additive sources. The FR additives are classified in well-known FR families, including phosphorous, melamine, nitrogen, inorganic hydroxides, boron, and silicon. The mechanism of fire retardance in each family is pinpointed. In addition to the efficiency of each FR in increasing the flame retardancy, its impact on the mechanical properties of the PE system is also discussed. Most of the FRs can decrease the heat release rate (HRR) of the PE products and simultaneously maintains the mechanical properties in appropriate ratios. Based on the literature, inorganic hydroxide seems to be used more in PE systems compared to other families. Finally, the role of nanotechnology for more efficient FR-PE systems is discussed and recommendations are given on implementing strategies that could help incorporate flame retardancy in the circular economy model.

The use of graphene nanoplatelets (GnP) as reinforcing material for thermoplastic polymer matrices, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and zinc borate (ZnB), as an antimicrobial and fire‐retardant agent was studied. PMMA‐ZnB and PMMA‐GnP‐ZnB (ZG) composite films were fabricated with different ZnB concentrations (2.5, 5, 10 wt%) by solvent casting method using acetone. The effect of additives on the antimicrobial activity, thermal and mechanical properties, and surface morphologies of the composites were investigated. Antimicrobial surface activity tests were conducted against seven microorganisms, including bacterial and fungal species. An improvement in antimicrobial activity by up to 99.99% with increasing ZnB content was observed. Thermal stability was increased with increasing concentration of ZnB and a combination of ZnB and GnP additions. 10% ZG‐based composites increased the % char residue value of PMMA from 0.5% to 9.3%. The incorporation of the ZnB and GnP into the PMMA matrix resulted in an increase in the calculated limiting oxygen index (LOI). 10% and 50% weight loss temperature increased by 11.7°C and 3.7°C, respectively, for 10% ZG composites. The Young's modulus of the composites increased with increasing ZnB and a combination of ZnB and GnP loading (increasing by 16% to 2033 MPa with the addition of 10 wt% ZG). The commercial application for this study would be in high touch and piano black automotive interior, construction, and medical applications.

The flame-retardant micro-encapsulated sepiolite (MSEP) was successfully prepared by sol-gel method. Fourier transform infrared, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive spectroscopy were utilized to prove that sepiolite was encapsulated. Then, the mechanical properties, flame retardance, smoke suppression, and pyrolysis characteristics of silicone rubber foam (SiFs) with MSEP and zinc borate (ZB) were analyzed. The results indicated that the tensile and compressive properties of SiFs could evidently improve with the incorporation of MSEP/ZB. SiFs with 3 wt% MSEP and 6 wt% ZB could achieve an limiting oxygen index value of 30.9 vol% and UL-94 V-0 rating, the time to ignition was 64.7% above that of pure SiFs, the peak heat release rate and total heat release were 42.7% and 25.0% lower than that of pure SiFs, respectively. Furthermore, the peak smoke production rate and total smoke production of SiFs with 3 wt% MSEP and 6 wt% ZB were merely 54.22% and 64.10% of pure SiFs. Especially, the thermal stability of SiFs was significantly enhanced, and the carbon residue of SiFs became denser and more complete after adding 3 wt% MSEP and 6 wt% ZB.
