Introduction: Brazil ranks 5th in the number of deaths due to road injuries. This study aimed to analyze mortality and disabilities resulting from road injuries in Brazil, and to assess the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) target of reducing deaths due to road injuries by 50% by 2030. Methods: This descriptive and exploratory study used the estimates from the Global Burden of Disease 2019: indicators of mortality, premature deaths, and disabilities according to sex, age group, and type of transport for 1990, 2015, and 2019. Time trends in mortality rates from 1990 to 2019 were assessed, and a projection for 2030 was calculated, applying a linear regression model. Results: Deaths due to road injuries were 44,236 in 1990, and 44,529 in 2019, representing a 43% reduction in mortality rates. The highest rates were in the North, Northeast, and Midwest regions of Brazil, in males and young adults. A 77% reduction was observed in mortality rates for pedestrians and an increase of 53% for motorcyclists and of 54% for cyclists during the period. In terms of motorcycle road injuries, the mortality rate for men increased from 7.3/100,000 (1990) to 11.7/100,000 inhabitants (2019). The rates of premature deaths and disabilities were also higher for men when compared to women. Amputations, fractures, spinal cord injuries, and head trauma were the main types of road injuries. The projections for 2030 show that Brazil might not reach the SDG target. Conclusions: Despite the decline in mortality rates, the 2030 Agenda's target might not be achieved.

Objective: To determine the impact of helmet wearing on traumatic brain injury. Methods: We analyzed 400 cases of traumatic brain injury (TBI) in motorbike riders with and without helmet, from July 2017 to December 2020 presenting to the neurosurgery department at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center (JPMC), Karachi, Pakistan. The medical records were analyzed for CT scan findings, length of hospital stay, complications (mortality and disability), Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) and Glasgow outcome score (GOS) at time of discharge. Results: A total of 400 patients with head injury due to motorbike accidents were included and all were male patients. They were equally divided into two groups, 200 in Group-A (with helmet) and 200 in Group-B (without helmet). Majority of the unhelmeted patients i.e. 102 (51%), needed admission in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) compared to 70 (35%) in helmeted. When comparing non-helmeted patients to helmeted patients, the total median length of hospital stay was greater among non-helmeted patients (10 vs 05 days). Mortality was higher among non-helmeted patients seen in 50 (25%) as compared to 14 (7%) in helmeted patients. Overall, the good outcome was observed in 119 (59.5%) patients in Group-A as compared to70 (35%) patients in Group-B while 81 (40.5%) showed bad outcome in Group-A and 130 (64%) in Group-B. The failure to wear a helmet was found to be strongly linked with abnormal neuroimaging more complications, poor outcome and lower GCS on discharge as compared to patients using helmet. Objetive: to evaluate the use drugs by individuals hospitalized due to non-lethal physical trauma. Methods: prospective study carried out on a transversal cohort by assessing secondary data and toxicological analyses in a hospital of a municipality of Southern Brazil. Individuals were selected after being hospitalized due to trauma likely to be caused by drug abuse. There were assessing cases reported by public and private basic health care systems registered by the Center for Control of Intoxications, which were identified by clinical criteria or due to reports from the subjects. Biological samples were obteined for toxicological trialing. Results: nine cases (17.7%) were consideraded moderate or severe by the Glasgow trauma scale,and results obtained using the Revisited Trauma Score system indicated three cases (6.7%) as oderate or severe. The most severe cases involved individuals aged 20 to 39. Quantitative analysis f ethanol determined its presence in all samples, and at toxic levels in 15.8% of the biological amples assessed. Nine subjects had used cannabis (15.8%) and five had used cocaine (8.8%) in association with ethanol. Conclusion: the high incidence of drug use in the assessed subjects confirms the relation between drug abuse and increased risk for physical traumas.
