Block-level Storage is widely used to support heavy workloads. It can be directly accessed by the operating system, but it faces some durability issues, hardware limitations and performance degradation in geographically distributed systems. Object-based Storage Device (OSD) is a data storage concept widely used to support write-once-read-many (WORM) systems. Because OSD contains data, metadata and an unique identifier, it becomes very powerful and customizable. OSDs are ideal for solving the increasing problems of data growth and resilience requirements while mitigating costs. This paper describes a scalable storage architecture that uses OSD from a distributed P2P Cloud Storage system and delivers a Block-level Storage layer to the user. This architecture combines the advantages of the replication, reliability, and scalability of a OSD on commodity hardware with the simplicity of raw block for data-intensive workload. We retrieve data from the OSD in a set of blocks called buckets, allowing read-ahead operations to improve the performance of the raw block layer. Through this architecture we show the possibility of using OSD on the back end and deliver a storage layer based on raw blocks with better performance to the end user. We evaluated the proposed architecture based on the cache behavior to understand non-functional properties. Experiments were performed with different cache sizes. High throughput performance was measured for heavy workloads at the two storage layers.

RESUMOO desenvolvimento tecnológico vivenciado nosúltimos anos proporcionou o crescimento do universo digital de forma exponencial, parte desse universo digital encontra-se armazenado em sistemas de armazenamento em nuvem. A cada dia surgem mais destes sistemas, que oferecem o armazenamento de dados de forma distribuída com alta taxa de disponibilidade, o que tem impucionado cada vez mais usuários a migrarem seus dados para a nuvem. No entanto, a grande quantidade de arquivos armazenada nestes sistemas dificulta a filtragem de conteúdo relevante, demandando tempo e trabalho por parte do usuário na busca por arquivos com conteúdo similar as suas preferências. Diante deste cenário, esta pesquisa propõe um modelo de recomendação para sistemas de armazenamento em nuvem, que tem como objetivo utilizar características da nuvem associadasà técnica de recomendação baseada em conteúdo. ABSTRACTThe technological development in recent years has experienced the exponentially growth of the digital universe, part of this digital universe lies stored in cloud storage systems. With each day, more of these systems come out, offering data storage in a distributed manner with the proposal to provide high availability rate, what has driven more and more users who have migrated your data to the cloud. However, the large amount of files stored in these systems makes it difficult to filter relevant content, requiring time and labor by the user in searching for files with similar content to your preferences. Face of this scenario, this study proposes a model for recommendation of files in cloud storage systems, which aims to use cloud features associated with the technique of content-based recommendation.Vivemos em uma era de efervescência informacional, a cada dia se produz mais informação e, geralmente, estas informações são armazenadas em meios digitais. O tamanho do universo digital cresce de forma exponencial. Segundo relatório publicado pela EMC Corporation 1 [22], em 2005, o volume de dados chegou a 130 exabytes; em 2010, superou 1 zettabyte e a previsãoé que em 2015 chegue a quase 8 zettabytes [16].Este universo digital citado em Gantz e Reinse [16] expande e torna cada vez mais complexa a tarefa de filtragem de conteúdo relevante que atendaàs preferências do usuário. Dentre as técnicas utilizadas na filtragem de conteúdo podemos citar os sistemas de recomendação [26]. 1

Abstract-EUBrazilOpenBio is a collaborative initiative addressing strategic barriers in biodiversity research by integrating open access data and user-friendly tools widely available in Brazil and Europe. The project deploys the EU-Brazil Hybrid Data Infrastructure that allows the sharing of hardware, software and data on-demand. This infrastructure provides access to several integrated services and resources to seamlessly aggregate taxonomic, biodiversity and climate data, used by processing services implementing checklist cross-mapping and ecological niche modelling. A Virtual Research Environment was created to provide users with a single entry point to processing and data resources. This article describes the architecture, demonstration use cases and experimental results.
