Uterine distension and the function of the corpora lutea in the guinea‐pig

Abstract: 1. The presence of two glass beads (7 × 3 mm) in each horn of the uterus was associated with a reduction of 3‐4 days in the length of the oestrous cycle. 2. Two beads inserted into each uterine horn between days 2 and 4 exerted a greater effect on the oestrous cycle than either one bead in each horn or four beads in one horn only. Two beads located in one horn failed to affect cycle length. 3. Measurement of the volume of the corpora lutea showed that distension of the uterus induced a premature regression in … Show more

“…Recent reviews (1,2) affirm that the IUCD inhibits sperm transport in fowls and sheep (1,3), delays LH release and ovulation in rabbits (4), inhibits ovulation in Holstein heifers and water buffalo (5,6), alters uterine motility and capacity in sheep and humans (7,8,9) causes sterile inflammation of the endometrium in rats and humans (10,11,12,13), changes the endometrial content of calcium and phosphatases in monkeys and humans (14,15) and modifies responses to estrogens and progestogens in rats (16,17,18). IUCD's impair corpus luteal function in rabbits, guinea-pigs, cattle, sheep and pigs (4,19,20,21,22) but evidence for this effect in primates is conflicting. A shortening of the menstrual cycle was reported in rhesus monkeys and in humans after insertion of an IUCD but this effect was considered to be of no biological significance (23,24).…”

“…Histological examination of the ovaries This was kindly performed by Dr. K. P. Bland, who measured the size and number of corpora lutea in each ovary, using the method of Bland & Donovan (1966). On the basis of these measurements and of the general appearance of the ovaries he was able to assess the functional state at the time of death without knowing the origin of the samples he was examining.…”

“…These results are in agreement with those of Henricks (1971). The expected shortening of cycle length (Bland & Donovan, 1966) was not always seen. In the present experiments, the injection of PGF2a always had an adverse effect on luteal function regardless of the time of administration.…”
