Uterovaginal Packing as Treatment in Primary Postpartum Hemorrhage in Patan Hospital

Abstract: Aims: To study the effectiveness of uterovaginal packing in the management of primary postpartum hemorrhage (PPH).Methods: This is a retrospective study conducted in Patan hospital, Lalitpur from January 2009-2011. Patients included in the study were those with intractable hemorrhage not responding to oxytocics. Exclusion criteria included cases of PPH due to trauma. “…Similar findings were also found in many previous studies. [33][34][35][36][37] In other study, impact of mode of delivery, parity and underlying cause of PPH on the outcome was statistically not significant with p-values of 0.461, 0.128 & 0.165 . 38 Similar statistical non-significance has been stated in the study by Fatima N, et al in 2008 39 for the above mentioned variables, with pvalue of 0.91, 0.49 and 0.91 respectively.…”

“…in patients unresponsive to uterotonics. Uterovaginal packing by causing mechanical compression of uterine vascular sinuses is a quick, effective and cheap method of securing haemostasis in a large number of cases 12,13 . So, if medical management fails, uterine packing is a simple and effective method which can avoid other complicated surgical procedures and help save life of mothers 14 .…”

“…16 This modality is useful in controlling hemorrhage from uterine atony, coagulopathy, placental implantation site bleeding caused by placenta previa or Placenta acreta. The reported efficacy of uterovaginal packing in the treatment of postpartum hemorrhage is 90.9% 17 , 98.6% 18 , 85% 19 and 84.7% 20 in various research studies. The goal of treatment with uterovaginal packing for all causes of postpartum hemorrhage is cessation of bleeding in a timely fashion before the onset of consumptive coagulopathy and signs of end organ failure.…”
