The world’s electricity generation has increased with renewable energy technologies such as solar (solar power plant), wind energy (wind turbines), heat energy, and even ocean waves. Iran is in the best condition to receive solar radiation due to its proximity to the equator (25.2969° N). In 2020, Iran was able to supply only 900 MW (about 480 solar power plants and 420 MW home solar power plants) of its electricity demand from solar energy, which is very low compared to the global average. Yazd, Fars, and Kerman provinces are in the top ranks of Iran, with the production of approximately 68, 58, and 47 MW using solar energy, respectively. Iran also has a large area of vacant land for the construction of solar power plants. In this article, the amount of electricity generation using solar energy in Iran is studied. In addition, the construction of a 10 MW power plant in the city of Sirjan is economically and technically analyzed. The results show that with US$16.14 million, a solar power plant can be built in the Sirjan region, and the initial capital will be returned in about four years. The results obtained using Homer software show that the highest maximum power generation is in July.

Aiming for a sustainable and secure energy future, policies are being formulated in Brunei Darussalam for supplementing the national energy base with renewable resources and technologies. Some preliminary studies in this direction indicated that solar energy could be a potential energy option for the country. Technical feasibility and economic viability of such grid integrated solar PV power plants, under the Bruneian environment, are investigated in this study.The prevailing energy scenario is analyzed and future trends in electricity consumption are predicted based on the time series energy use data. The forecast indicates that the annual electricity consumption may reach up to 4.32 Billion kWh by the year 2020. The possibility of exploiting the available solar energy resource for meeting this growing electricity demand is investigated.Five year's solar radiation data from Maura district were collected and analyzed under the study. The solar energy resource is characterized in terms of monthly averaged total daily global, beam and diffused radiations and hourly variations in solar intensity. Availability of solar energy in the region is also statistically modeled using Beta distribution.Performance of a solar photovoltaic power plant under these levels of insolation was simulated using the RETScreen model. With a total panel area of 10,619 m 2 , such a plant is expected to show a capacity factor of 18.1 per-cent and generate 1,899.2 MWh electricity annually. This clearly indicates the technical feasibility of grid integrated solar power plants in Brunei Darussalam. Under the economic analysis, the unit cost of electricity generation was estimated to be BND 0.30/kWh. A detailed cost benefit analysis, over the life cycle of such power projects, is also presented.

Recent Advances in Multifunctional Photothermal Materials for Solar‐Driven Steam and Energy Generation

Solar‐driven evaporation technology is rejuvenated by multifunctional photothermal materials into complimentary energy conversion applications. These multifunctional materials endow broadband solar absorptions, chemical/physical stability, porous, and active sites for in ‐situ photodegradation with exceptional solar‐to‐vapor conversion efficiencies. The structural configuration of evaporation structures is significantly improved by effective thermal management and salt‐resistant water channels with balanced relation between evaporation flux and water intake. These attributes lead this technology to higher evaporation rates and complimentary applications such as waste heat recovery to thermoelectricity, salt collection from seawater, and micro‐organism disinfection from wastewater. This review comprehensively reports the recent advances in state‐of‐the‐art multifunctional materials, novel evaporation designs with significant structural optimization, and their small‐scale prototypes. The current challenges, origins, and possible solutions are provided. This systematic review inspires the nanoresearch community to push forward solar‐driven evaporation technology with superb complimentary energy conversion applications.
