UV-Activated NO2 Gas Sensing by Nanocrystalline ZnO: Mechanistic Insights from Mass Spectrometry Investigations

Abstract: In this work, the photostimulated processes of O2 and NO2 molecules with the surface of ZnO under UV radiation were studied by in situ mass spectrometry in the temperature range of 30–100 ∘C. Nanocrystalline needle-like ZnO was synthesized by decomposition of basic zinc carbonate at 300 ∘C, and the surface concentration of oxygen vacancies in it were controlled by reductive post-annealing in an inert gas at 170 ∘C. The synthesized materials were characterized by XRD, SEM, low-temperature nitrogen adsorption (B… Show more

“…The method for examining the gas-sensitive properties of nanocrystalline oxides and the setup for sensor measurements are described in detail in our previous work [ 43 ]. Briefly, the gas-sensitive properties of the synthesized oxides were studied by in situ measurement of the electrical resistance of thick (about 100 m) conducting polycrystalline porous films.…”

“…A thick conductive layer was formed on the measuring plates over the Pt electrodes by annealing at 300 °C a pasty mixture of metal oxide with -terpineol. The obtained sensors have a linear current–voltage characteristic at bias up to 4 V [ 43 ].…”

“…The synthesized nanocrystalline ZnO (5 mg) was mixed with 50 L of -terpineol in an agate mortar and the resulting mixture was ground to form a thick dispersion, which was applied to the surface of the measuring plate with a volume of 2–3 L, then dried at 70 C and annealed at 300 C for 24 h. After annealing, a nanocrystalline conductive ZnO film with a thickness of about 100 m with a linear current-voltage characteristic was obtained. A more detailed characterization of the ZnO layers obtained by this method is given in our previous works, for example [ 61 ].…”

“…Over the years, many publications have demonstrated the suitability of low-power UV LEDs to activate the surface sensing mechanism of many SMO films at low or room temperatures, such as SnO 2 [ 99 ], In 2 O 3 [ 100 ], ZnO [ 101 ], WO 3 [ 102 ], and TiO 2 [ 103 ]. While many authors noted a clear increase in the sensitivity response, the SMO sensors nevertheless—whether UV-enhanced or not—still suffered from poor selectivity when a single metal oxide material was used.…”
