UV Degradation of Fusion Bonded Epoxy Coating in Stockpiled Pipes

Abstract: Sunlight exposure is known to cause degradation in polymer coatings. However, quantitative data relating exposure to mechanical and corrosion properties is missing. Thus, it is very difficult for pipeline operators to make fair assessment of the impact of stockpiling coated pipe on project economics and pipeline integrity. As a result, a study was undertaken to quantify the effects of sunlight exposure on Fusion Bonded Epoxy (FBE) coating on stockpiled pipe. Sections of production pipe stockpiled in the southe… Show more

“…The FBE coating may begin to degrade prior to the service life of the pipe due to storage conditions, for example, via ultraviolet (UV) exposure during stockpiling in the field [ 164 ]. Physical ageing of glassy polymers leads to rapid deterioration of transport properties, usually accompanied by an increase in selectivity of the polymer against a gas mixture [ 114 ].…”

“…Even, if pipelines are not necessarily exposed to UV degradation, it can be an important factor to take into account. Indeed, before their use on a pipeline structure, pipes coated with FBE can be stored outdoor and thus suffer from UV degradation which could lower their barrier or other properties before use [155]. Cetiner et al [155] studied the effect of preliminary UV exposure on FBE in stockpiled pipes on their gloss, cathodic disbondment, adhesion, flexibility and impact properties.…”
