Vacuum ultraviolet spectra and crystal field analysis ofYAlO3doped withNd3+and

Abstract: The synchrotron radiation excited emission and excitation spectra are reported at temperatures of 298 and 10 K for YAlO 3 ͑YAP͒ doped with 1 at. % Nd 3+ or Er 3+. For both systems, no d-f emission is observed and these results are rationalized and compared with other hosts. For YAP: Nd 3+ , excitation into the 4f 2 5d electronic configuration of Nd 3+ gives intraconfigurational luminescence from 2 G͑2͒ 9/2 and 4 F 3/2 and there is no evidence for emission from other multiplet terms. Luminescence from 2 P 3/2 i… Show more

“…Actually, it was reported that YF 3 :Pr 3 þ shows 4f-4f emission from 1 S 0 [38,39]. In Nd 3 þ and Tm 3 þ doped YAlO 3 , many luminescence peaks were observed by various 4f-4f transitions [40][41][42][43][44][45][46][47]. Some UV luminescence peaks in the Nd 3 þ and Tm 3 þ samples were observed mainly from the emission levels of 2 G(2) 9/2 and 3 P 0, respectively.…”

“…Fast scintillators emitting in VUV spectral region can be coupled with position-sensitive detectors filled with photosensitive gases or with other VUV-sensitive detectors and used in special imaging techniques [1]. Wide band-gap fluorides are the best single crystal host for this purpose, and the Nd 3+ ion provides fast 5d-4f emission around 180-190 nm in the host lattices like LaF 3 , LiYF 4 , LuLiF 4 , BaY 2 F 8 and others [2][3][4], while the oxide hosts are not suitable for this purpose due to the overlap of the lowest lying 5d levels with the 4f ones [5]. High energy shifted Nd 3+ emission, i.e.…”

“…YAP crystals have good optical, thermal and mechanical properties similar to YAG crystals. YAP single crystals doped with rare-earth and transition metal ions are prospective materials for laser engineering, scintillators, holographic recording, data storage and substrate materials for thin films of high-temperature superconductors [3][4][5]. Point defects created during crystal growth or under different external stimulus (irradiation, thermal treatment, etc.)…”
