Validating the Remarriage Belief Inventory as a Dyadic Measure for Stepcouples

Abstract: Stepcouples remain a comparatively understudied group and few established measures specific to these couples exist. The Remarriage Belief Inventory assesses beliefs and attitudes relevant to couple dynamics in stepfamilies and has been validated using samples of individuals. An important next step in instrument development is the examination of the factorial structure for use with husband-wife dyads. Results from a dyadic confirmatory factor analysis using a sample of 631 stepcouples confirmed the structure of… Show more

“…This 22-item instrument assesses spouses’ adherence to seven dominant social narratives about stepfamilies. This acceptance of these unrealistic or inconsistent beliefs has been found to be predictors of marital discord, disappointment and frustration, and a lower reporting of stepfamily satisfaction (Garneau, Adler-Baeder & Higginbotham, 2016; Higginbotham & Adler-Baeder (2005). The seven beliefs, and subscales, include: The past stays in the past. Stepfamilies are inferior. Success is slim. Children are the priority. New partner is perfect. Finances should be pooled. Adjustment comes quickly. …”

“…Cohesion was lower for men who believed that children are the priority and that success is slim . More recently, the RMBI was validated as a dyadic measure for stepcouples (Garneau et al., ). This now allows for the important next step of testing theory and assessing dyadic influences of beliefs about remarriages and stepfamilies on couple processes and outcomes.…”

“…As a valid dyadic measure (Garneau et al., ), the RMBI can be used to assess actor–partner effects. Actor–Partner Interdependence Models (APIM) account for the interdependence in multiperson steprelationships.…”
