Validation and comparison of five preference-based measures among age-related macular degeneration patients: evidence from mainland China

Abstract: Purpose To compare the psychometric properties of five preference-based measures (PBMs) among patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in mainland China, including three health-related quality of life (HRQoL) measures [the 15D, the Assessment of Quality of Life (AQoL)-7D, and EQ-5D-5L] and two capability wellbeing measures [the ICEpop CAPability measure for Adults (ICECAP-A) and ICECAP measure for Older people (ICECAP-O)]. Methods A convenience sampling framework was used to successively recruit in… Show more

“…The choice of health utility measures for the calculation of QALYs depends on many aspects, including but not limited to the psychometric properties of the measures, brevity and ease of use, the availability of country-specific tariff and the comparability across different diseases [ 51 ]. From an economics perspective, the SG and TTO are the most accepted approaches because they are based implicitly on utility theory and involve an inherent gamble or trade-off [ 52 ].…”

“…Ensuring that these tools are culturally relevant and sensitive to the population's characteristics is crucial for obtaining meaningful and applicable results in economic evaluations. Moreover, it's essential to transparently report the methods used to derive utility scores or QALYs from these instruments, as this can significantly impact the results and their applicability in healthcare decision-making [ 36 ].…”

“…Well-designed well-being measures are useful to rationalize resource allocation in health and social care in China, however, limited well-being measures are available for use in Chinese populations. The ICECAP-A (ICEpop CAPability measure for adults) was adapted in Chinese 16 , but was found to perform less satisfactorily compared to EQ-5D and AQoL-7D 17 , 18 and has not been frequently used in practice in China. The Short Warwick–Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Scale (SWEMWS) has been translated into Chinese and has been demonstrated in the general population and hospitalized patients 19 , 20 , but it focuses more on positive mental well-being and does not aim to estimate utilities.…”
