Validation of a Behavior Test for Predicting Puppies’ Suitability as Detection Dogs

Abstract: Behavioral characteristics are the most influential factor in the success of a working dog. The need for highly capable detection dogs continues to rise; but reliable methods for early selection are lacking. The current study aimed to assess the reliability and validity of a behavioral test for assessing detection dog suitability. A cohort of candidate detection dog puppies (n = 60) were tested at 3; 5; and 11 months of age; as well as at the completion of training at approximately one year. Tests were designe… Show more

“…Participants highlighted the importance of including all known factors in an EDC's initial training and ensuring consistent access to continued exposure after initial certification. Selecting an innately confident future EDC is key as acclimation may mask behaviors that could emerge and degrade performance at inopportune times [9,35]. Some of the factors (e.g., elevated spaces and noxious stimuli from machinery) involve innate mammalian responses that may be difficult to fully overcome [36,37].…”

“…In turn, applied research has started to give insight into typical dog development, such as the normal range and developmental trajectory of behavioral traits, using large-scale owner questionnaires (e.g., Serpell & Hsu, 2001) and behavioral evaluations (e.g., Bray, Gruen, et al, 2021;Serpell et al, 2016;Svartberg, 2005). Hall et al, 2021) as well as the cognitive, behavioral, environmental, and genetic factors that contribute to working dog outcomes (e.g., Bray, Otto, et al, 2021;Lazarowski et al, 2021).…”

“…The Behavior CheckList was originally designed for assistance and guide dogs, but it may be generalizable to other types of working dogs, such as detection dogs, when augmented with additional job-specific phenotypes (e.g., hunt drive, indication, bite) ( 47 ).…”
