Validation of a Dutch Self‐efficacy Scale for Adherence to Fluid Allowance Among Patients on Haemodialysis

Abstract: SUMMARY Many haemodialysis patients have problems limiting their fluid intake, and this might be influenced by their self‐efficacy. Thus interventions to improve patients’ self‐efficacy might lead to an improvement in their adherence to fluid restriction. The fluid intake appraisal inventory (FIAI) evaluates patients’ self‐efficacy with regard to fluid intake. The aim of this study was to translate and validate the FIAI for use in the Netherlands. Four translators, seven experts, and four haemodialysis patient… Show more

“…Perceived disease-related self-efficacy (DSE) is essential to self-managing chronic disease successfully [3]. Recent studies discuss how ESRD patients treated with HD carry out selfmanagement activities in their daily life [11][12][13][14][15][16]. Patients should follow the treatment recommendations and learn to include them in their life circumstances in order to make CKD progress slowly and to have a stable life [3].…”

“…Başarılı HD tedavisi için; sıvı kısıtlamasının, diyet rehberinin, ilaç reçetelerinin dikkate alınması ve HD seanslarına düzenli katılım gerekir (4,19,20). HD'de en fazla stres yaratan ve tedaviye uyumda zorlanılan alan sıvı kısıtlamasıdır (4,19,21,22,23,24,25). Hastalık ilerledikçe HD hastaları idrar oluşturma yeteneklerini kaybeder.…”

“…Intervention research has suggested that increased selfefficacy is associated with adherence treatment [23], healthpromoting behaviour [24,25], and improved quality of life [26e28]. In Taiwan, Tsay determined that an experimental group that received self-efficacy training had better restricted fluid intake compliance than the control group [14].…”
