Validation of a single-stage submaximal treadmill walking test

Abstract: The single-stage treadmill walking test of Ebbeling et al. is commonly used to predict maximal oxygen consumption (.VO(2max)) from a submaximal effort between 50% and 70% of the participant's age-predicted maximum heart rate. The purpose of this study was to determine if this submaximal test correctly predicts .VO(2max) at the low (50% of maximum heart rate) and high (70% of maximum heart rate) ends of the specified heart rate range for males and females aged 18 - 55 years. Each of the 34 participants complete… Show more

“…Since this test is not usually practical, formulas that predict VO 2 max have been developed over the years. VO 2 max can be evaluated by means of a fitness test or by other methods [39]. The Bruce protocol assumes that maximum oxygen consumption can be evaluated by the duration of time a subject is able to walk or run on a treadmill.…”

“…The SSTWT is a convenient protocol for estimating the VO 2 peak (VO 2peak ) in individuals of various ages and fitness levels [61], and it has been used previously [61–63]. The SSTWT includes two 4 min stages.…”

“…An eight-minute submaximal treadmill test has been developed to estimate VO 2peak in healthy adults [12], and is proven valid for women with rheumatic diseases [13], who may experience similar symptoms as patients with pediatric rheumatic diseases. However, in healthy adults the test seems to either under- or overestimate VO 2peak depending on the chosen intensity [14]. The validity of this test is unknown for patients with JIA and healthy children.…”
