Validation of Electrochemical Sensor for Determination of Manganese in Drinking Water

Abstract: Manganese (Mn) is an essential nutrient for metabolic functions, yet excessive exposure can lead to neurological disease in adults and neurodevelopmental deficits in children. Drinking water represents one of the routes of excessive Mn exposure. Both natural enrichment from rocks and soil, and man-made contamination can pollute groundwater that supplies drinking water for a substantial fraction of the U.S. population. Conventional methods for Mn monitoring in drinking water are costly and involve a long turn-a… Show more

“…It should be noted that the detection limit is lower with higher linearity than those obtained by the previous MIP-based sensor of ncovNP, and meanwhile, they are also more superior to those presented in some other previous studies. 13,37,38 Reproducibility and stability as well as selectivity are great important factors of sensors, thus they were also evaluated. First, eight parallelly constructed MIP/P-Arg/Au/Gr/SPCE were used to test the electrochemical response of 50.0 fM ncovNP for evaluating its reproducibility; relative standard deviation (RSD) value of 3.32% revealed that the MIP/P-Arg/Au/Gr/SPCE has desirable reproducibility (Fig.…”

“…Manganese (Mn) is a metal that is required for metabolic processes (Boselli et al, 2021). The dissolution of minerals from soil by rain, surface, and waste water filtering increases manganese in groundwater sources (Ghosh et al, 2008).…”

“…Many methods have been developed to detect Hg, e.g., cold vapor atomic fluorescence, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, fluorescence analysis, and even glucometer readout detection. Most of them, however, are based on spectroscopy and generally require infrastructure, bulky and expensive instrumentation, and skilled personnel. These are rarely available in underdeveloped areas or at the point of need . In this regard, the ASSURED criterion for a suitable sensing interface method has been formalized by the WHO: Affordable, Sensitive, Specific, User-friendly, Rapid and Robust, Equipment-free, and Deliverable to end-users.…”
