Validation of modelled imaging plates sensitivity to 1-100 keV x-rays and spatial resolution characterisation for diagnostics for the “PETawatt Aquitaine Laser”

Abstract: Thanks to their high dynamic range and ability to withstand electromagnetic pulse, imaging plates (IPs) are commonly used as passive detectors in laser-plasma experiments. In the framework of the development of the diagnostics for the Petawatt Aquitaine Laser facility, we present an absolute calibration and spatial resolution study of five different available types of IP (namely, MS-SR-TR-MP-ND) performed by using laser-induced K-shell X-rays emitted by a solid silver target irradiated by the laser ECLIPSE at … Show more

“…The two carbon mirrors stop XUV radiations with energies above 200 eV, enabling to perform XUV measurements unperturbed by second order or higher order diffraction from the grating. TR Image Plates are sensitive in both these spectral ranges because they are not protected [33][34][35]. Two other spectrometers measure the un-attenuated backlighter emission spectra, referred to as the "I 0 " measurement.…”

“…This was coated with a layer of parylene-N to prevent plasma filling the pinhole and absorbing the X-rays. An image, with a magnification of 10.8, was formed on an image plate (BAS-TR FUJIFILM [37] -characterised in [38,39]) 228.6 mm from the gas cell. The image plate was filtered with two layers of 12.5 µm Ti filters for Sc XRBL targets.…”

“…Imaging plates were scanned at 25 µm nominal resolution with a calibrated General Electrics Typhoon FLA7000 scanner. The true resolving power is expected somewhat worse than that [226,227]. We found realistic resolutions of 50-100 µm in edge-measurements with straight metallic edges (boundaries defined with better than 30 µm) mounted directly on top of the IP detector.…”
