Validation of the Basque Revised NEO Personality Inventory (NEO PI-R)

Abstract: Although personnel selection processes for Basque civil servants often involve the assessment of personality, there are currently no Basque self-report instruments that provide valid and reliable measures of the Big-Five factors of personality. The aim of this study was to validate the Basque version of the Revised NEO Personality Inventory (NEO PI-R; Costa & McCrae, 1992 ), by examining its psychometric properties. We assessed the dimensionality of the instrument, the convergent and discriminant validity,… Show more

“…Unexpectedly, Poland’s position was not in vicinity of its geographic or linguistic neighbors but in the neighborhood of rather distant countries such as Philippines and India. New data from Spain (ESP2; Sanz & García-Vera, 2009) were located in a considerable distance from the position of the previous Spanish version, much closer to the position which is occupied by the Basque version of the NEO-PI-R (Gorostiaga et al, 2011). As a matter of fact, the distance between the first (ESP) and the second (ESP2) Spanish samples is one of the largest among all possible distances in the plot.…”

“…We also searched the Web of Science, PsycINFO, Google Scholar and other databases. New translations of the NEO-PI-R/3 became available for several languages: Basque (Gorostiaga, Balluerka, Alonso-Arbiol, & Haranburu, 2011), Bulgarian (Costa & McCrae, 2007), Greek (Fountoulakis et al, 2014), Icelandic (Jonsson & Bergthorsson, 2004), Latvian (Van Skotere & Perepjolkina, 2011), Lithuanian (Žukauskiene & Barkauskiene, 2006), Romanian (Ispas, Iliescu, Ilie, & Johnson, 2014), and Tigrigna (or Tigrinya; Bahta & Laher, 2013). Although an earlier version of NEO-PI was translated into Finnish (Pulver, Allik, Pulkkinen, & Hämäläinen, 1995), data for Finnish version of the NEO-PI-R were collected for a more recent project (Lönnqvist, Paunonen, Tuulio-Henriksson, Lönnqvist, & Verkasalo, 2007), which mean values were provided by Jan-Erik Lönnqvist.…”

“…Increasingly many authors advocate for creating short-form surveys. They are advantageous in that they can be more rapidly administered, and sample participants prefer them (e.g., Gallarin & Alonso-Arbiol, in press; Gorostiaga, Balluerka, Alonso-Arbiol, & Haranburu, 2011).…”

“…Items are answered on a 5-point Likert-type scale ranging from 1 ( erabat desados / strongly disagree) to 5 ( erabat ados / strongly agree). The psychometric properties of the Basque NEO PI-R (Gorostiaga et al, 2011) were adequate. In the present study, the following reliability indices were observed: Cronbach’s alpha equal to .82, .81, .79, .80, and .85 for Neuroticism, Extraversion, Openess, Agreeableness, and Conscientiousness, respectively.…”

“…It is comprised of 23 items with a 5-point Likert-type response scale ranging from 1 ( erabat desados / strongly disagree) to 5 ( erabat ados / strongly agree). The psychometric properties of the short version of the TMMS-23 in Basque (Gorostiaga et al, 2011) were adequate. In the present study, the following indices of internal consistency were observed: Cronbach’s alpha equal to .88, .84, and .86 for Attention, Clarity, and Repair, respectively.…”
