Validation of the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy‐Fatigue (FACIT‐F) in patients with inflammatory bowel disease

Abstract: SUMMARY BackgroundMany patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD) complain of significant fatigue. To date, no instrument to measure fatigue has been validated in a US inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) population.

“…A difference of 3-4 units is considered a minimal clinically important difference [12]. In addition, breast cancer patients in our study had a lower mean ± SD FACIT-fatigue score (35.33 ± 10.84) than those reported for patients with inflammatory bowel disease (38.9 ± 11.0) and psoriatic arthritis (35.8 ± 12.4) [8,12]. …”

“…The FACIT-fatigue scale has reasonable evidence of validation in a variety of populations, including patients with rheumatoid arthritis [6,7], psoriatic arthritis [8], chronic immune thrombocytopenia [9], Parkinson's disease [10,11], inflammatory bowel disease [12], and systemic lupus erythematosus [13,14], anemic patients with cancer [15,16], as well as the general United States population [17]. It has shown excellent internal consistency and test-retest reliability and also has strong associations with other fatigue measurement tools and with active disease characteristics.…”

“…These findings are analogous with those of several previous studies in which only subjective disease activity scales were applied. [22][23][24][25] Patients with more extensive disease, indicating elevated disease burden, had higher fecal calprotectin levels. However, neither widespread disease nor high calprotectin levels were associated with higher fatigue scores, pointing to a discrepancy between the severity of fatigue and objective markers of inflammation and disease activity.…”

“…I vårt materiale var hemoglobinnivå/anemi assosiert med fatigue i fire av studiene (14,18,21,24), mens det i åtte (9,11,15,17,19,20,26,27) ikke ble påvist noen slik sammenheng.…”
