Validation of the VapoMeter, a closed unventilated chamber system to assess transepidermal water loss vs. the open chamber Tewameter®

Abstract: From skin barrier damage experiments it became clear that the Tewameter is able to detect significantly smaller differences than the VapoMeter. In addition, the closed chamber device is currently not sensitive enough to discriminate for the effects induced by diurnal rhythm and fluctuations as a function of time. On the other hand, the small and handy VapoMeter allows more flexibility in measuring protocols and in in-use performance.

“…TEWL was measured using a VapoMeter (Delfin Technologies Ltd., Kuopio, Finland). The VapoMeter uses the closed-chamber measurement principle to determine the evaporation rate of water from skin [29]. High-frequency skin conductance was measured using the Skicon-200EX® (IBS Co. Ltd., Hamamatsu, Japan) skin surface hygrometer.…”

“…Briefly, films specimens were mounted and sealed in the top of open specially designed cups filled with distilled water up to 1.1 cm from the film underside and left to equilibrate for 1 h at room temperature (22-23 • C, 42-46% RH). The Vapometer has a closed measuring chamber not sensitive to external airflows with a humidity sensor that enable measurements in normal room conditions [43]. Three film samples were tested for each type of film.…”
