Validity and reliability properties of canine short-term heart rate variability measures—a pilot study

Abstract: The objective of the pilot study was to compare validity and reliability properties of Polar RS800CX (Polar Electro Oy, Kempele, Finland) against simultaneously recorded electrocardiogram (ECG) measuring timeand frequency-based short-term heart rate variability (HRV) parameters, in dogs during stationary standing position. Five-minute recordings with less than 5% error rates from inter-beat interval (IBI) series obtained by Polar RS800CX and ECG, in 8 adult dogs, were used for HRV analysis. Polar data were sta… Show more

“…Twenty-four-hour SDNN, SDANN, and SDANN index values reported in the current study were similar to values published from 24-h ambulatory electrocardiograph recordings in healthy dogs [20,21]. SDNN values in healthy dogs reported in other studies, e.g., [22,23,24], are not comparable to PetPace SDNN values as they were not measured during ambulation and data were collected for 5–60 min vs. 24 h.…”

“…They consisted of a wearlink strap, a watch-computer and a wireless integrated network device. The Polar ® RS800CX has been validated for measuring heart rate variability of dogs [69][70][71][72] and employed in studies using music as environmental enrichment [9,47,73]. The Polar ® V800 has been validated for measuring heart rate variability in humans [74].…”
