Validity of using perceived exertion to assess muscle fatigue during back squat exercise

Abstract: The rating of perceived exertion (RPE) scale has been found to reflect physiological responses, and this study aimed to assess the validity of using the Borg CR-10 scale and velocity loss to evaluate muscle fatigue quantified by surface electromyography during back squat (BS) exercise. A total of 15 collegiate male athletes underwent three non-explosive BS tasks comprising low, medium, and high volumes at 65% of their one-repetition maximum. RPEs, spectral fatigue index (SFI), and velocity loss during BS exerc… Show more

“…Although RPE was a subjective measurement, there was a high correlation between RPE and heart rate during exercise (r = 0.62 -0.90) [31]. According to a previous study, RPE is also correlated to muscle fatigue [32,33]. It is possible that when the runners increase the intensity or speed of running, the pelvic drop would occur faster because of muscle fatigue.…”

“…The original scale, introduced by Gunnar Borg, utilizes a 15-point scale (the Borg 6 -20 RPE Scale), expressing effort levels on a scale of 6 -20 (16). Its validity and reliability have been widely reported (17)(18)(19)(20). The correlation coefficient between the RPE scale and HR was found to be 0.85 (P < 0.…”

“… 43 However, we understand that for learning reasons, subjects could be asked to perform at a controlled velocity during the programme’s initial phase. In this case, the use of RPE to control the LoE can also be extended to multi-joint 72 and single-joint 73 exercises performed at a controlled velocity.…”
