Value of morphological parameters for grading of brain swelling

Abstract: This study investigated the value of both gross features and histological findings for grading of brain swelling. For this purpose, the grooving of the temporal gyri (unci) as well as the extension of the cones at the basal part of the cerebellum were measured in 42 brains obtained at autopsy. Furthermore, the distension of perivascular spaces in tissue samples from seven different regions of the brains was evaluated histologically, assisted by an automatic image processing and analysis system. In each individ… Show more

“…This applied only to cases with secondary complications involving other organ systems (e.g., pneumonias). Owing to these influencing factors, we considered it advisable to observe these cases critically and in comparison with H&E staining when evaluating the results [29]. Neurodegenerative brain disorders, in particular, Alzheimer's disease [30] and Parkinson's disease [31], constitute an additional influencing factor.…”

“…The reason for the appearance of slight signs of cerebral edema in causes of death not directly involving the brain may be hypoxia during agony. Agony can last at least several minutes which may be enough time to cause hypoxia in the brain due to depraved circulation and blood oxygenation [32][33][34][35]. Slightly elevated water content in the brain due to edema may also influence quantitative values.…”

“…With respect to the different morphometrical data obtained in subgroups B-E compared to the controls, it could be of forensic interest to establish threshold values for the diagnosis of hypoxic injury in human brain tissue, as performed in quantitative morphological studies concerning traumatically induced reactions in the human brain [8][9][10][11][12] or postmortem features of the neuronal stem cells [7]. In this context, the most reliable indicator might be a significantly reduced proportion of intact Purkinje cells (PC I) related to the total cell numbers (PC total).…”
